✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

Dolphins live off the Algarve coast all year, and the species seen most often are the common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin. Dolphin trips last around two to two and a half hours and leave from Lagos, Albufeira, Faro and other marinas, often combined with a visit to the sea caves. Beyond dolphins, you can choose cave tours to Benagil and Ponta da Piedade, sunset cruises, catamaran trips with lunch and island hopping in the Ria Formosa. Dolphin Watching in the Algarve

Which dolphins will you see?

The species seen most often off the Algarve are the common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin. Striped dolphins, Risso's dolphins and harbour porpoises are also recorded, and on some trips you may see minke whales, ocean sunfish or seabirds such as northern gannets. Dolphins are wild, so no sighting is guaranteed, and guides head for the areas where they have been seen most recently.

When to go

Dolphins can be seen all year. May to September usually brings calmer seas and more departures, which makes the trips more comfortable. Early morning and late afternoon are often good times, and in rough weather trips can be cancelled at short notice.

Responsible dolphin watching

In mainland Portugal, cetacean watching is regulated by law (Decreto-Lei 9/2006), which sets rules for how boats approach and stay with the animals. Book with licensed operators, follow the crew's instructions and avoid trips that promise swimming with dolphins.

How to Choose a Boat Trip

  • Boat size: small boats get closer to the cliffs and into the caves. Large catamarans are steadier and have toilets and shade.
  • Seasickness: the open sea can be choppy on dolphin trips. The Ria Formosa lagoon is the calmest option.
  • Children: some operators set minimum ages, especially on fast boats. Check before you book.
  • Benagil rules: since August 2024, swimming into Benagil Cave and landing on its beach are banned, and boats have limited time inside.
  • What to bring: sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, water, a light jacket and a dry bag for your phone.
  • Booking: reserve ahead in July and August, when the popular departures sell out.
