Seven days is the right length for a first Algarve trip: enough to see the quiet east around Tavira and the cliffs and caves of the west. With a car, drive from Faro to Tavira, Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Lagos and Sagres, and finish in the Monchique hills. Without a car, use the coastal railway between Faro, Tavira, Portimão and Lagos, and book boat tours for Benagil and Ponta da Piedade. Split the week between two bases so you spend less time packing.
This guide has a day-by-day road trip, a car-free version, advice on how many days you need and where to stay.
How Many Days Do You Need in the Algarve?
The Algarve coast is compact, but the sights are spread from the Spanish border to Cape St. Vincent. As a rough guide:
| Trip length | What you can cover |
|---|---|
| 3 days | One area only, usually the west: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade, Benagil and Sagres |
| 5 days | The west plus Albufeira and Carvoeiro, or a split between Faro and Lagos |
| 7 days | East and west: Faro, Tavira, Albufeira, Benagil, Lagos and Sagres |
| 10 to 14 days | Everything above at a slower pace, plus Monchique, Silves and beach days |
Driving vs Public Transport
Both work, but they lead to different trips.
- With a car: you reach Sagres, the Monchique hills, Cacela Velha and the smaller beaches between towns, and you can stop at viewpoints along the coast. Parking in old towns is hard in summer. The A22 motorway along the Algarve has had no tolls since January 2025.
- Without a car: the railway runs along the coast from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, with stations in Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira. Since July 2026, electric trains run the whole line without a change in Faro. You will rely on boat tours for the caves and on buses or taxis for Sagres and smaller beaches.

Where to Base Yourself
Moving hotel every night eats into a short trip. For a week, two bases work best:
- East (3 nights): Faro or Tavira, for Faro's old town, the Ria Formosa lagoon, Tavira and Olhão.
- West (4 nights): Lagos, Carvoeiro or Portimão, for Benagil, Ponta da Piedade, Sagres and Monchique.
If you prefer a single base, Albufeira or Carvoeiro sit in the middle and keep most drives under an hour.

7-Day Algarve Road Trip Itinerary
This route starts at Faro Airport, heads east first and then works west, so the most dramatic coastline comes at the end of the week.
Day 1: Faro and the Ria Formosa
Pick up your car at Faro Airport and start in the walled old town, entering through the Arco da Vila. Climb the bell tower of the cathedral for views over the lagoon, and visit the Igreja do Carmo, known for its Chapel of Bones. In the afternoon, take a boat into the Ria Formosa Natural Park or a ferry to Ilha Deserta or Ilha do Farol for a beach on a sandbar island.
⛵ RIA FORMOSA ISLANDS BY BOAT
A boat trip from Olhão through the Ria Formosa lagoon to the beaches of Armona, Culatra and Praia Deserta.
See the boat tour →Day 2: Tavira and Cacela Velha
Drive east to Tavira, the main historic town of the eastern Algarve. Walk up to the castle, cross the old bridge over the Gilão River and visit the Igreja da Misericórdia. In the afternoon, drive about 20 minutes to Cacela Velha, a small village on a hill above the lagoon, and walk down to Praia da Fábrica at low tide.
Day 3: Olhão and Loulé Markets
Olhão's waterfront market halls sell fish, fruit and local products, and the old town behind them is a maze of cube-shaped houses. Drive about 30 minutes inland to Loulé for its covered market, castle and archaeological museum. Finish with a wine tasting at one of the estates outside town before driving to your western base.
Day 4: Albufeira and Praia da Falésia
Start with a walk along Praia da Falésia, almost 6 km of sand below red and white cliffs. Continue to Albufeira's old town and the beaches below it, then drive west toward Carvoeiro for the evening.
Day 5: Benagil, Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha
Take a boat tour to Benagil Cave in the morning. Landing on the beach inside the cave is not allowed, so a boat or a guided kayak tour is the way to see it. In the afternoon, walk the clifftop path to Praia da Marinha and finish at the Algar Seco rock formations in Carvoeiro.
BENAGIL CAVE BOAT TOUR
A 2-hour boat trip from Portimão along the coast to the Benagil caves, on boats that can enter the caves.
See the Benagil tour →Day 6: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade and Sagres
Spend the morning at Ponta da Piedade, where boardwalks follow the cliffs above sea arches and grottoes, and go down the wooden staircase to Praia do Camilo. Explore Lagos old town, the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira and the Igreja de Santo António. Late in the afternoon, drive about 40 minutes west to Sagres, visit the fortress and watch the sunset at Cabo de São Vicente.
PONTA DA PIEDADE BY KAYAK
A guided kayak tour from Lagos Marina along the cliffs, arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade.
See the kayak tour →Day 7: Monchique Hills
Head inland to the Serra de Monchique for a change of scenery. Drive up to Fóia, at 902 m the highest pint in the Algarve, stop at the spa village of Caldas de Monchique, and try local honey and medronho, a strong fruit brandy. Drive back to Faro Airport or on to Lisbon.

How many days do you need in the Algarve?
Seven days lets you see both the eastern and western Algarve without rushing. With three days, focus on one area, usually Lagos, Benagil and Sagres in the west.
Is 5 days enough for the Algarve?
Yes, for the highlights of the west: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade, Benagil, Carvoeiro and Sagres, plus a day in Albufeira or Faro. You will have to skip the east or Monchique.
Can you do the Algarve without a car?
Yes. The coastal railway links Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Faro, Olhão and Tavira, and boat tours cover Benagil and Ponta da Piedade. A car is still the easier way to reach Sagres, Monchique and smaller beaches.
What is the best route for an Algarve road trip?
Start in Faro, visit Tavira and the east first, then drive west through Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Lagos to Sagres. End in the Monchique hills before driving back to Faro or on to Lisbon.
Where should you stay for a week in the Algarve?
Split the week between two bases, such as Faro or Tavira in the east and Lagos or Carvoeiro in the west. For a single base, Albufeira or Carvoeiro are the most central.
Can you combine the Algarve with Lisbon?
Yes. Trains connect Lisbon with Faro and, with a change at Tunes, with Lagos. Our Lisbon and Algarve packages combine both regions by train or by car.
