Algarve Beyond the Beach: Hiking & Nature Tour

The Portugal Getaways Algarve Beyond the Beach package includes round-trip flights, 7 nights of hotel accommodation in Portimão, airport transfers on arrival and departure, 5 included guided experiences (Seven Hanging Valleys hike, Iberian Lynx hike, Thermal Spring hike, Algarve Jeep Safari, and Benagil Boat Tour), and all taxes and fees related to the booking. Breakfast, meals, rental car, and city taxes are not included. You stay in the same hotel for all 7 nights with no room changes. The day-by-day schedule shown in the itinerary is a suggestion. The exact order of experiences can be adjusted based on availability and your preferences.

• Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (half-day, private): A private clifftop walk above the most iconic sea caves in Portugal, covering approximately 6 km between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes. Passes natural arches, sinkholes, and the viewpoint above Benagil. Snack included. Duration approximately 5 hours door to door. Hotel pickup included.

• Iberian Lynx Hike (half-day, afternoon): A 7 km intermediate trail through the hills above the Barragem de Arade reservoir, in active Iberian lynx territory. Tours run in late afternoon when wildlife activity is highest. Duration approximately 3.5 hours. Hotel pickup included.

• Thermal Spring Hike (half-day, morning): An easy 3 km river valley walk ending at a natural hot spring bath at 27°C (81°F). Bring swimwear. Duration approximately 2.5 hours. Hotel pickup included.

• Algarve Jeep Safari (full day): Off-road through the Serra de Monchique, cork oak forests, old villages, and gastronomic tastings including local honey, jam, and medronho. River swim stop weather permitting. Lunch not included. Hotel pickup included.

• Benagil Boat Tour (2 hours): A boat tour from Portimão Naval Club east along the coastline to Carvoeiro, passing Ferragudo castle, deserted beaches, cliffs, caves, and the Benagil Cave. Hotel pickup is not included. Meeting point: Portisub, Largo da Praia, next to the Portimão Museum. All hotels are within a 20-minute walk or 5 minutes by taxi. Arrive 30 minutes before departure.

• Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: Rated easy to moderate. Mostly flat with some uneven rocky sections. Good walking shoes, sunblock, hat, and extra water required. Walking poles available on request.

• Iberian Lynx Hike: Rated intermediate. 7 km with several climbs and descents on dirt tracks. 1.5 litres of water per person and shoes with good grip recommended. This is the most demanding experience in the package.

• Thermal Spring Hike: Rated easy. 3 km on flat terrain following a river valley. Water shoes or flip flops for river crossings and swimwear required.

• Jeep Safari: No hiking involved. Suitable for all fitness levels.

• Benagil Boat Tour: No physical effort required. Suitable for all fitness levels. If you are prone to seasickness, bring medication.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a private experience exclusive to your booking group. Your guide is not managing other guests. The pace, the stops, and the conversation are tailored entirely to you. This is included in the package at no extra cost and is one of the key differentiators of this tour.

Neither is guaranteed. The Iberian lynx is one of the rarest wild cats in the world. Your guide knows the terrain and the signs of lynx activity, but this is wild habitat, not a zoo. Sightings do happen and the late afternoon timing of the hike maximizes the chance. The experience is worth doing regardless. The landscape, the conservation story, and the guide's knowledge of the area make it one of the most distinctive hikes in Portugal. 

Yes, round-trip flights are included. The package price varies depending on your departure airport. Other departure cities are available on the package page and additional options are available on request. Seat selection, extra baggage, and cabin class upgrades can be arranged as paid add-ons, subject to availability.

Checked luggage is not always included and depends on the airline and fare type in your package. You can confirm what is included and add luggage during the booking process. The Portugal Getaways team is always available to help if you prefer to arrange it with us directly.

The package includes 4-star hotels in Portimão, all near Praia da Rocha and the waterfront. The package price varies depending on the hotel selected. Upgrade to the 5-star hotels is available. All properties are within easy walking distance of the Benagil boat tour meeting point. Exact options are shown when you click a date in the booking calendar and proceed to the next step. Breakfast is not included by default but can be added during the booking process. The Seven Hanging Valleys hike includes a snack (water, fruit, and cereal bar). The Jeep Safari includes gastronomic tastings along the route. All other meals are at your own expense. 

No. Airport transfers are included on arrival and departure, and all 5 experiences have hotel pickup except the Benagil boat tour, which is within a 20-minute walk or 5 minutes by taxi. If you want to explore the Algarve independently on your free day or in the evenings, a rental car can be added for some or all of your stay. Contact the Portugal Getaways team when booking and we will arrange it.

No. City taxes are not included and are paid directly at the hotel on arrival or checkout.

Yes. If a specific hike does not suit your fitness level or physical condition, contact the Portugal Getaways team before booking and we will find the best alternative from the available experiences. The Thermal Spring hike is the easiest experience in the package and can be kept for anyone who finds the Iberian Lynx hike too demanding. Addtional costs may apply.

The Algarve rarely sees severe weather but heavy rain or strong wind can occasionally affect trail conditions, particularly on the clifftop hikes. If a hike is cancelled on your scheduled day, the Portugal Getaways team will work with the local operator to reschedule or find the best available alternative.

Yes. Seville is approximately a 3-hour drive from Portimão and can be arranged as a full-day guided bus tour with no driving required. It can be added when you book.

Yes to all three. The Portugal Getaways team can add nights in Portimão, include a day trip to Seville or Tangier, or combine this package with Lisbon, Porto, or Madeira. Additional costs apply. 

If you are travelling solo, the package price is based on two travelers sharing a room and a single supplement applies. Contact the team directly and we will make it easy. The Algarve is part of Portugal, consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Europe for travelers, with no active conflicts and not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere. 

Canadian and US passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization for Schengen Area travel, is not yet mandatory. When it launches, we will contact you in advance with enough time to complete the process. 

The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Portugal Getaways team will always check with the airline to explore options.
