Why This Package Is Worth It

The Algarve Is More Than a Beach Destination
Most people come to the Algarve for the beaches. The coast delivers. But what is behind it, the lynx trails, the hidden river valleys, the thermal springs, the cork oak forests, and the sea caves you can only reach by boat, is what makes this trip different. This 7-night package is based in Portimão for the full stay with 5 guided experiences covering the side of the Algarve most visitors never reach.
Airport transfers included. No rental car needed, though one can be added for days you want to explore independently.
Included Tours: Seven Hanging Valleys Trail → Iberian Lynx Hike → Thermal Spring Hike → Jeep Safari → Benagil Sea Caves Boat Tour
Trip Code: #12652
Your Trip Itinerary

- Day 1Arrival in the Algarve

Welcome to Portugal! Your transfer from Faro Airport to your hotel in Portimão is included. The drive takes about 45 minutes along the EN125, and it's your first look at the Algarve interior. Flat scrubland, cork oak trees, and the occasional stork nest on a telephone pole. Not what most people expect.
Check in, drop your bags, and take the afternoon at your own pace. Portimão is a real city, not a resort built for tourists.
Suggestion:
- Walk down to Praia da Rocha, grab a coffee at one of the seafront cafés, and get your bearings.
- Eat close to the hotel and rest. The week starts tomorrow.
- Local tip: Portimão has no shortage of good seafood restaurants within walking distance of the hotels. Order the cataplana, a traditional Algarve seafood stew cooked in a copper pot. It feeds two, takes about 30 minutes to prepare, and it's the best introduction to local food you'll find on a first night.
- Day 2
Seven Hanging Valleys Hike - Included

9 AM to 2 PM: Seven Hanging Valleys Hike (Private | Half-Day | Easy to Moderate) - Included
A private clifftop walk above the most iconic sea caves in Portugal
This is the most photographed coastline in southern Portugal, and once you're on the trail you'll understand why. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail runs along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes, passing natural arches, sinkholes, and the top of the Algar de Benagil, the cave with the circular ceiling opening that you've probably already seen online.
Your guide picks you up at the hotel at 9:00 am. The drive to Praia da Marinha takes about 30 minutes, and your guide uses the time to walk you through what you're about to see: 20 million years of coastal geology, explained by someone who actually knows it.
The hike covers roughly 6km in two phases. The first 90 minutes follows the most dramatic section of the cliff, with stops at rock formations, natural arches, and the viewpoint above Benagil. At 11:00 am, there's a short break at a panoramic viewpoint near Praia do Carvalho: water from the Monchique springs, fruit, and a cereal bar. The second phase continues along the coast and ends at Vale Centeanes at 12:40 pm, where there's time for a coffee at the beach bar before your private transfer back to the hotel.
- Total hiking time: 3 hours 10 minutes. Door to door: 5 hours.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Mostly flat with some uneven rocky sections.
- What to bring: Good walking shoes, sunblock, hat, and extra water.
Please note:
- ✅ Included: Hotel pick up and drop off (Portimão)
- ✅ Included: Walking poles on request
- ✅ Included: Snack (water, fruit, & cereal bar)
- ❌ Not included: Additional food and drinks
- Day 3
Iberian Lynx Hike - Included
.jpg)
Suggestion for this morning: Your hike starts in the late afternoon, so you have the morning free. Walk into central Portimão, explore the riverside area, and have lunch at one of the local restaurants near the Arade River before your guide picks you up at the hotel.
3 PM to 7 PM: Iberian Lynx Hike (7km | Intermediate | Half-Day Tour) - Included
Into lynx territory, above the lakes of Silves
Most people don't know the Algarve has lynx. The Iberian lynx is one of the rarest wild cats in the world, and the hills around Silves are part of their recovery corridor. You won't be guaranteed a sighting. This is not a zoo. But your guide knows the terrain, knows the signs, and knows what to look for.
The hike covers 7km through the hills above the Barragem de Arade, a large reservoir surrounded by cork oak and Mediterranean scrubland. The trail follows dirt tracks and country roads with several climbs and descents overlooking the lake. Your guide covers the local fauna, the landscape, and everything there is to know about the lynx conservation program along the way.
Tours run in the late afternoon, when the light is low and wildlife activity is at its highest.
- Distance: 7km
- Duration: 3.5 hours
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- What to bring: 1.5L of water per person, comfortable shoes with good grip, and sunscreen.
Please note:
- ✅ Included: Hotel pick up and drop off (Portimão).
- ❌ Not included: Food and drinks.

- Day 4
Thermal Spring Hike - Included

9 AM to 12 PM: Thermal Spring Hike (3km | Easy Half-Day Tour) - Included
A slow walk through a river valley to ancient hot spring baths
A shorter morning today, and deliberately so. This 3km easy hike follows a river valley through dense shade, crossing the same calm, shallow river multiple times before arriving at a natural hot spring bath carved into the hillside. The water sits at 27°C (81°F) year-round. Bring your swimwear.
The pace is slow, the terrain is flat, and the setting is completely different from the coast. Cork oak, wild fig, and river sounds the whole way. Your guide covers the history of the springs and the local flora along the route.
- Distance: 3km
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Difficulty: Easy
- What to bring: 1.5L of water per person, water shoes or flip flops for the river crossings, swimwear and a towel, and sunscreen.
Please note:
- ✅ Included: Hotel pick up and drop off (Portimão)
- ❌ Not included: Food and drinks

This afternoon's suggestion: Take the ferry from Portimão across to Ferragudo. It takes five minutes. Ferragudo is a small fishing village that avoided the mass tourism of the rest of the coast. Narrow white streets, a 16th-century castle above the river mouth, and some of the best grilled fish in the Algarve right on the waterfront.
- Day 5
Algarve Jeep Safari - Included

9 AM to 5 PM: Algarve Jeep Safari (Full Day) - Included
Off-road through the villages, hills, and cork forests of the interior
Today you go inland. The full-day jeep safari covers the Algarve that doesn't appear in travel guides: off-road tracks through the Serra de Monchique, old villages where almost no tourists stop, natural viewpoints over the hills, and a cork oak forest where your guide walks you through the entire life cycle of the tree that supplies most of Europe's wine bottle stoppers.
Along the way there are stops for gastronomic tastings: local honey, homemade jam, and medronho, the traditional Algarve brandy distilled from wild strawberry trees. Your guide will also stop at a working distillery. If the weather is right, there's a river stop for a swim.
Lunch is at a typical local restaurant and is not included in the package price. Your guide will recommend what to order.
- Duration: Full day
- Difficulty: No hiking involved, suitable for all fitness levels
Please note:
- ✅ Included: Hotel pick up and drop off (Portimão).
- ❌ Not included: Lunch, or any food and drinks.
- Day 6
Benagil Boat Tour - Included
.jpg)
Benagil Boat Tour (2 Hours) - Included
From Portimão to Benagil by sea, past caves, cliffs, and the coast most visitors never reach
The Benagil Cave is probably the most photographed spot in Portugal right now, and the only way to see it properly is from the water. This 2-hour boat tour departs from the Portimão Naval Club, a short walk from all hotels in this package, and heads east along the coastline toward Carvoeiro.
Along the way you'll pass the village of Ferragudo and its riverside castle, deserted beaches only accessible by sea, dramatic rock formations, high cliffs, and several caves before reaching Carvoeiro Beach at the end of the route. Your guide covers the local history and geology throughout.
- Duration: 2 hours
- Departure point: Portimão Naval Club
- Schedules: Multiple daily departures from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Contact the Portugal Getaways team if you'd like a specific time slot
Please note:
- ❌ Not included: Hotel pick up and drop off (Portimão).
- Meeting Point: Arrive 30 minutes before departure at Portisub - Clube Subaquático de Portimão, next to the Portimão Museum, Largo da Praia. All hotels in this package are within a 20-minute walk. A taxi takes under 5 minutes.
- Day 7 Free Day in Portimão

Suggestion: No tours today. After a full week on the trails, this is your day to slow down.
If the weather is good, Praia da Rocha is right on your doorstep. One of the longest urban beaches in Portugal, wide, sheltered, and walkable from every hotel in this package. The old fort at the end of the beach is worth the walk.
For souvenir shopping, the streets around Rua do Comércio in central Portimão have local ceramics, almond sweets, and regional products. The municipal market is also worth a stop if you want to take something genuinely local home.
Tonight: Last dinner in the Algarve. Go back to your favorite spot from the week or try somewhere new. Either way, order the local almond tart for dessert. The Algarve produces some of the best almonds in Europe and the pastry reflects that.

Neither is guaranteed. The Iberian lynx is one of the rarest wild cats in the world. Your guide knows the terrain and the signs of lynx activity, but this is wild habitat, not a zoo. Sightings do happen and the late afternoon timing of the hike maximizes the chance. The experience is worth doing regardless. The landscape, the conservation story, and the guide's knowledge of the area make it one of the most distinctive hikes in Portugal.
