Christmas in Portugal: The Snow Road Trip

The Portugal Getaways Christmas Snow Road Trip includes round-trip flights, 7 nights of hotel accommodation (2 Porto, 3 Serra da Estrela, 2 Lisbon), a one-way rental car picked up at Porto Airport and dropped off at Lisbon Airport, and all taxes and fees related to the booking. The one-way fee is included. Guided tours, and city taxes are not included. 

You arrive in Porto and pick up the rental car. After 2 nights, you drive southeast to Serra da Estrela (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, 260 km). After 3 nights in the mountains, you drive southwest to Lisbon (approximately 3 hours, 300 km). You drop off the car at Lisbon Airport on departure day. All drives are on well-maintained roads. A GPS is recommended for mountain routes.

A one-way rental car is included, picked up at Porto Airport and dropped off at Lisbon Airport. The standard vehicle is a compact manual car. Automatic transmission is available on request at an additional cost. You will need a valid US or Canadian passport and driver's license at pickup.

The rental includes basic third-party liability insurance. A collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included depending on the rental company. Even with CDW, most rentals have a mandatory excess. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available, which can be arranged through the Portugal Getaways team.

Yes, tolls apply on motorways between Porto, Serra da Estrela, and Lisbon. Most rental cars include a toll device that charges automatically. Ask the rental company to confirm at pickup. Toll costs are not included in the package price. The Portugal Getaways team will send you a travel checklist with a tolls calculator from Via Verde before your trip.

Snow is likely but not guaranteed. The peaks above 1,500 meters receive snow regularly in December, and the Torre plateau at 1,993 meters is the most reliable spot. Lower elevations around Covilhã may not have snow even when the peaks do. The mountain landscape and the Christmas markets around Covilhã are worth the trip regardless of snow conditions.

Porto's main market fills Avenida dos Aliados with wooden stalls, a towering Christmas tree, and live music. The WOW Christmas Market in Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro offers gourmet food, wine tastings, and crafts with views back over the river. Markets typically open in late November and run through early January.

Wonderland Lisboa in Parque Eduardo VII is the largest, with an ice rink, Ferris wheel, and festive stalls. Rossio Square has traditional crafts and seasonal pastries. The city's main boulevards are decorated throughout December. 

The package includes 4-star hotels as standard. The package price varies depending on the hotel selected. In Porto, properties are centrally located with good access to the Christmas markets and the Douro waterfront. In Serra da Estrela, all properties are mountain hotels, some rural in character, all chosen for their location within or close to the park. In Lisbon, most properties are centrally located. The Christmas markets are typically free to enter. Purchases, food, drinks, and any paid activities at the markets are at your own expense.

Breakfast availability varies by hotel. At some properties, daily breakfast is included in the package at no additional cost, while at others it can be added during the booking process for an additional fee. The exact breakfast inclusions for your selected hotels will be shown during booking.

Porto averages 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), mild with some rain. Serra da Estrela is significantly colder, with temperatures between 0°C and 8°C (32°F to 46°F) and snow possible above 1,500 meters. Pack warm layers, waterproof boots, and a jacket for the mountains. Lisbon is the mildest at around 13°C to 17°C (55°F to 63°F), often sunny even in December.

Yes. Porto and Lisbon are worth visiting year-round, and Serra da Estrela is one of the most underrated destinations in Portugal in any season. In spring the park is green and the waterfalls are at their best. In summer the plateau is popular for hiking and the temperatures are mild at altitude even when the coast is hot. In autumn the light is extraordinary and the crowds are gone. The snow angle is specific to December, but the road trip works in any month.
