Santo da Serra Golf Course is one of Madeira’s most iconic golfing landmarks. Originally built in 1937 and completely redesigned in 1991 by Robert Trent Jones, it now stands as a 27-hole championship course, formed by three distinct 9-hole loops: Machico, Desertas, and Serras.
Set high above the island, the course descends nearly 300 metres from top to bottom, delivering sweeping panoramic views and dramatic elevation changes throughout the round. Club selection here is never routine, altitude, wind, and terrain play a decisive role on almost every hole, making course management essential.
Despite its demanding reputation, Santo da Serra is designed to play fair rather than punishing. Fairways are generally generous, trees sit well back from play, and water hazards are limited, allowing golfers to focus on shot-making rather than forced carries. Conditioning is consistently excellent, with well-maintained fairways and greens that reflect the course’s championship pedigree.
Among the standout moments, holes 2 and 4 on the Machico loop are particularly memorable, combining elevation, exposure, and striking views, the kind of holes golfers tend to talk about long after the round is finished.
