Monday: Curral das Freiras, Monte & Toboggan Descend (08:35 AM - 12:25 PM)

Begin your adventure in Funchal and set off toward Pico dos Barcelos, one of Madeira’s most remarkable viewpoints. From this elevated perch, take in sweeping views across the island—an ideal introduction to its dramatic landscape.

Next, ascend to Eira do Serrado, a peaceful mountain retreat surrounded by chestnut trees and eucalyptus groves. Along the way, you'll spot narrow roads, ancient tunnels, and stone paths still used by locals and hikers alike.

Climbing to an altitude of 1,094 meters, arrive at Curral das Freiras, a secluded village nestled in a volcanic crater. Its name, “Nuns’ Valley,” recalls the 16th-century nuns who found refuge here during pirate invasions. The isolation of the valley and the sheer cliffs that surround it make this one of Madeira’s most awe-inspiring sights.

Take time to savor local flavors, including homemade chestnut cake, regional sweets, and traditional liqueurs—delicacies unique to this hidden village.

The journey continues to Monte, one of Madeira’s oldest and most iconic destinations. Visit the Church of Our Lady of Monte, where the tomb of Emperor Charles I of Austria is located, drawing history enthusiasts from around the world.

Santana Tour with pick-up included (08:30 AM - 5PM)

Departing from hotels in Funchal around 09:00, our knowledgeable driver will take you to the charming village of Camacha for a visit to its renowned wickerwork factory.

Next, we’ll ascend to Poiso (1,412m) and continue up to Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak in Madeira at 1,818m, offering breathtaking views.

We’ll then descend to Ribeiro Frio, where you can visit a trout farm and explore a remarkable part of Madeira’s Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our journey continues to Santana, famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses, where we’ll take a well-deserved lunch break (optional).

Finally, we’ll head along the northeast coast to Machico, stopping at a viewpoint to admire the impressive runway at Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo Airport and the rugged beauty of Ponta de São Lourenço, the driest region of Madeira.
