Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is a sea cave next to the village of Benagil, in the Lagoa area of the central Algarve. You can enter it only from the water, on a licensed boat tour or a guided kayak or paddleboard tour. Since August 2024 the rules ban swimming in, landing on the beach inside the cave and renting a kayak without a guide in the cave area.
This guide explains how to get to Benagil, which tour to choose, the rules in force and how to see the cave from the clifftop for free.

Where Is Benagil Cave?
The cave sits a short way along the coast from Praia de Benagil, a small beach below the fishing village of Benagil. The village belongs to the municipality of Lagoa and lies between Carvoeiro to the west and Armação de Pêra to the east. Praia da Marinha is the next beach to the west.
The cave is a large chamber carved into the limestone cliffs, with two sea-facing entrances, a small sandy beach inside and a round opening in the roof that lets in a column of light. Locals call the opening o olho, the eye.
Can You Drive to Benagil Cave?
You can drive to Benagil village and the beach, but the car gets you only as far as the cliffs. From the beach, the cave is reached by water on a tour.
- By car: Praia de Benagil is about 10 to 15 minutes by car from Lagoa town. The free car park on the clifftop, near the village restaurants, is the easiest place to leave the car, followed by a steep walk of about 7 minutes down to the beach.
- Roadside parking: spaces on the steep road down to the beach are limited and fill early in summer. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon.
- Without a car: take a taxi or transfer from Carvoeiro, Lagoa or Albufeira, or book a boat tour from a town with its own marina, such as Portimão or Albufeira, so the boat does the travelling.

How to Visit Benagil Cave
There are three ways to see the cave. Two take you inside, and one gives you the view from above.
1. Boat tour
The most common option, and the one that works for all ages. Boats leave from Benagil beach itself and from marinas and beaches along the coast. The shortest trips start at Benagil and Carvoeiro, while tours from Portimão and Albufeira take longer and usually pass other caves and the cliffs around Praia da Marinha on the way. Smaller boats can enter the cave, while larger catamarans may only stop at the entrance, so check the tour description before you book.
BENAGIL CAVE BOAT TOUR FROM PORTIMÃO
A 2-hour boat trip from Portimão along the coast to the Benagil caves, on boats suited to entering the caves.

2. Guided kayak or SUP tour
Paddling in gets you closest to the cave, and on a calm day you can also slip into the smaller caves along the cliffs. Under the current rules, kayak tours need one guide kayak for every six visitor kayaks, and renting a kayak without a guide is banned in the cave area. You need a reasonable level of fitness, and tours are cancelled when the swell is up.
BENAGIL KAYAK EXPERIENCE
A guided kayak tour along the Benagil coast and into the caves, led by a certified guide.

The roof opening can be seen from above, free and at any time of year. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) runs along the cliffs between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, about 6 km one way, and passes the opening above the cave. Walking the full route takes around 2.5 to 3 hours one way, or you can walk a few minutes up from Benagil beach just to see the cave from above. Stay on the path and keep back from the edges, since parts of the cliff are eroding.
BENAGIL AND MARINHA ON FOOT
A 5-hour guided walk to Algar Seco, Benagil and Praia da Marinha along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, with views of Benagil Cave from the clifftop.

The Capitania do Porto de Portimão, part of Portugal's National Maritime Authority, published new navigation rules for the Benagil caves in Edital 019/2024, which came into force on 13 August 2024. The rules came out of a working group led by CCDR Algarve with the Lagoa council, tourism bodies and boat operators. They apply to visitors and tour companies alike:
- No landing: disembarking on or using the beach inside the cave is banned for individuals and companies.
- No swimming in: reaching the caves by swimming or with flotation devices is not allowed.
- No unguided kayaks: renting a kayak without a guide is banned in the Benagil caves area, and kayak groups need one guide kayak for every six visitor kayaks.
- Limits inside the cave: the number of boats and kayaks inside at the same time is capped, and so is the length of each visit, so expect a short stop inside rather than a long stay.
- Fines: the caves lie within the Algarve marine natural park (Parque Natural Marinho do Recife do Algarve, Pedra do Valado), and breaking the rules is an environmental offence, with fines ranging from 300 euros up to 216,000 euros.
Rules and enforcement can be updated between seasons. Book with a licensed operator and check with them before you go.
Can You Go to Benagil Cave by Yourself?
Not inside the cave. Since August 2024 you cannot swim in, cannot land on the inner beach and cannot rent a kayak or paddleboard to go in without a guide. What you can do independently is drive to Benagil, spend time on Praia de Benagil and walk the clifftop trail to look down through the opening. To see the cave from the inside, join a licensed boat, kayak or SUP tour.
Best Time to Visit Benagil Cave
- Season: May to September usually brings the calmest seas and the most tour departures. Tours run in other months too, but they are cancelled more often because of swell.
- Time of day: the first departures of the morning and the late afternoon are the least crowded. Sunlight falls through the roof opening most directly around the middle of the day.
- Booking: in July and August, book ahead, since popular departures sell out.
- What to bring: swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and a dry bag for your phone. Kayak and SUP tours mean getting wet.
Make a Half Day of It
Benagil sits on one of the most scenic stretches of the Algarve coast, and the area is worth more than the cave alone:
- Praia da Marinha: the next beach west, framed by golden cliffs and sea stacks, with a car park above it and the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.
- Algar Seco, Carvoeiro: rock arches and natural pools reached by a boardwalk from Carvoeiro village.
- Carvoeiro: a small resort town built around a beach in a cove, with restaurants and the nearest choice of hotels.
- Armação de Pêra: a long sandy beach a short drive east, with the clifftop chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha.

Can you drive to Benagil Cave?
You can drive to Benagil village and park at the free clifftop car park, then walk down to Praia de Benagil. The cave itself is reached only by water, on a boat, kayak or SUP tour.
Can you swim to Benagil Cave?
No. The rules in force since August 2024 ban reaching the caves by swimming or with flotation devices, because of boat traffic and sea conditions.
Can you go to Benagil Cave by yourself?
Not inside it. Landing on the inner beach and unguided kayak rentals are banned. You can visit Benagil beach and see the cave from the clifftop trail on your own.
Can you walk on the beach inside Benagil Cave?
No. Disembarking on the beach inside the cave is prohibited for everyone, tour operators included.
Which is better, a boat or a kayak tour?
A boat tour suits families and anyone who prefers to stay dry, and often includes other caves on the way. A guided kayak tour gets you closer and into smaller caves, but needs some fitness and calm seas.
Is Benagil Cave open all year?
Tours run all year when the sea allows, but winter swell leads to more cancellations. May to September is the most reliable period.
