✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

The Algarve's best-known sea caves are on the stretch of coast between Lagos and Albufeira. Benagil, with its round opening in the roof, is the most famous, followed by the caves around Praia da Marinha and the arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. The sea caves can only be visited from the water on a guided boat, kayak or paddleboard tour, and landing on the beach inside Benagil is not allowed. Tours leave from Lagos, Portimão, Carvoeiro and Albufeira, and May to September has the calmest seas.

This guide covers the main caves, the ways to visit them, where tours depart from and the rules to know before you book.

1. Benagil Cave

Benagil is a large sea cave with a small beach inside and a round opening in the roof that lets in a beam of light.

The cave is reached from the water only. Current rules prohibit landing on the beach inside the cave for everyone, including tour operators, and kayaks and paddleboards can only enter as part of an official guided tour. Swimming into the cave from Benagil beach or nearby beaches is also banned. Rules and enforcement can change from season to season, so confirm the details with your operator.

2. Praia da Marinha and the Seven Hanging Valleys

Praia da Marinha, a short distance west of Benagil, is a beach framed by golden cliffs, sea stacks and small caves. Most Benagil boat tours pass along this stretch, and from land you can walk down to the beach or follow the cliff trail known as the Seven Hanging Valleys, which links Praia da Marinha with Benagil and gives views of the cave from above.

3. Ponta da Piedade, Lagos

Ponta da Piedade, south of Lagos, is a headland of limestone arches, sea stacks and grottoes. Small boats and kayaks leave from Lagos Marina and weave through the rock formations, and boardwalks and staircases on the cliffs give views from above. It is the best cave trip if you are staying in the western Algarve.

4. Algar Seco, Carvoeiro

Algar Seco is a group of rock formations, arches and blowholes on the cliffs next to Carvoeiro. It is not a sea cave, but a boardwalk from the village leads to arches and openings in the rock with views over the sea, and you can visit it on foot at any time. Many boat tours from Carvoeiro and Portimão pass by on the way to Benagil.

Where Do Cave Tours Depart From?

Pick the departure point closest to your hotel:

  • Lagos: Ponta da Piedade by boat or kayak, and longer boat trips east to Benagil.
  • Portimão: boat tours to Benagil and the caves around Praia da Marinha.
  • Carvoeiro and Benagil: the shortest trips to Benagil, including kayak and SUP tours.
  • Albufeira: boat tours from Albufeira Marina along the coast to Carvoeiro, often with dolphin watching.

Tips for Visiting the Algarve Caves

  • Season: May to September usually has the calmest seas. In winter, tours can be cancelled at short notice.
  • Time of day: early morning and late afternoon are quieter. Light through Benagil's roof opening is strongest around midday.
  • Booking: reserve summer tours in advance, since the popular departures sell out.
  • What to bring: sun protection, water and a waterproof bag for your phone or camera.
  • Choose a licensed operator: only official guided tours can take kayaks and paddleboards into Benagil.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve caves?
