Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest resort town, about 40 minutes from Faro Airport. Spend a morning in the old town and on Praia do Peneco, reached through a tunnel in the rock, then walk the 6 km of red cliffs at Praia da Falésia. Take a boat from Albufeira Marina to the Benagil caves and look for dolphins on the way. In the evening, the old town has seafood restaurants and the Strip has the bars and clubs.
This guide covers the top sights, beaches, tours and day trips, plus where to stay and how to get there.

1. Wander the Old Town
The old town sits on a cliff above the sea, with whitewashed houses and narrow lanes that sometimes taper to little more than an arm span. The center of life is a pedestrian square lined with cafés and restaurants, and a terrace behind one of the churches gives a wide view over the coast.
Worth a stop are the Igreja Matriz, the main church, built in the late 18th century, and the Municipal Archaeology Museum, in the former town hall on Praça da República. The town's fishermen have long honored Nossa Senhora da Orada, whose statue dates from the 1400s.
2. Walk Through the Tunnel to Praia do Peneco
Praia do Peneco, also called Praia do Túnel, is the beach right below the old town. A foot tunnel cut through the rock connects the pedestrian street Rua 5 de Outubro with the sand. At low tide you can explore the rock formations and small caves along the shore.
3. See the Fishing Boats at Praia dos Pescadores
The Fishermen's Beach, on the east side of the old town, is the town's main beach and the place where the colorful fishing boats are pulled up on the sand. It is wide, easy to reach from the center and lined with restaurants, so it works well for families who do not want to drive.
4. Walk Along Praia da Falésia
Praia da Falésia, east of the center, is a 6 km stretch of golden sand backed by red and white cliffs. Its length means you can find space even in August, and a walk along the shore at sunset is one of the best free things to do in Albufeira.

5. Take a Boat Trip to the Benagil Caves
Albufeira Marina is one of the main departure points for boat trips along the coast to Benagil, the most famous sea cave in the Algarve. Tours follow the cliffs west toward Benagil, Praia da Marinha and Carvoeiro, and many combine the caves with dolphin watching.
Current rules matter here: landing on the sand inside Benagil Cave is prohibited for everyone, and kayaks and paddleboards can only enter as part of a guided tour. Swimming into the cave from nearby beaches is also banned. A boat tour is the simplest way to see it, and late spring to early autumn has the calmest seas.

6. Spend an Evening at Albufeira Marina
The marina, west of the old town, is quieter than the center and lined with restaurants and bars facing the boats. It is the meeting point for most boat tours, so it is easy to combine a morning cruise with lunch on the waterfront.
7. Go Out on the Strip
Albufeira's nightlife is concentrated on Avenida Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro, known as the Strip, a long avenue of bars, pubs and nightclubs east of the center near Praia da Oura. It is busiest from June to September and gets loud late at night. If you want sleep, book a hotel away from this area.
8. Spend a Day at Zoomarine
Zoomarine Algarve, in Guia on the edge of Albufeira, is a marine park with animal presentations, rides, pools and slides. It also works as a rescue and rehabilitation center for marine animals. Book tickets ahead for summer visits.

A short drive inland, Paderne Castle stands on a hill above a bend of the Quarteira River. The Moors built it in the 12th century, and it was taken by Christian forces in 1248. It is one of the seven castles shown on the Portuguese coat of arms.
10. Explore the Hills on a Jeep Safari
The countryside behind Albufeira is rural and hilly, with small villages and farmland. Jeep safaris head inland on dirt tracks, usually with stops for local food or wine, and are a good option on a cloudy day.

West of town, Praia dos Salgados is a long beach backed by a coastal lagoon. The lagoon is full of birdlife in spring and autumn, which makes it a calm alternative to the central beaches.
12. Play Golf
Albufeira has several golf courses within a short drive, and some resorts are built around them. Balaia Golf Village and Pine Cliffs both have courses on site, which makes them good choices if golf is the main reason for the trip.

13. Take a Day Trip to Silves
Silves, about 20 minutes inland, was the capital of the Algarve under Moorish rule. Its red sandstone castle and cathedral are the main sights, and the town is a pleasant change from the coast. For more ideas, see our guide to the best day trips from the Algarve.

Where to Stay in Albufeira
The area you pick changes the trip more than the hotel:
- Old town: walkable, close to Peneco and Pescadores beaches, lively in the evening. Parking is hard.
- Oura and the Strip: the nightlife area, good for groups of friends. Noisy late at night in summer.
- Falésia and the east: quieter resorts on the cliffs, better for couples and families. You will need a car or taxis to reach the center.
- Marina: calmer than the center and close to the boat tours.

What is Albufeira best known for?
Albufeira is known for its beaches, its whitewashed old town on the cliffs and its nightlife on the Strip. It is also one of the main departure points for boat trips to the Benagil caves.
How many days do you need in Albufeira?
Three days are enough for the old town, the main beaches and a boat trip. With a week you can add Zoomarine, Paderne Castle and day trips to Silves, Carvoeiro or Lagos.
Is Albufeira good for families?
Yes. Praia dos Pescadores and Praia da Falésia have plenty of space, Zoomarine is on the edge of town, and many resorts have pools and kids' clubs. Families usually prefer hotels away from the Strip.
Can you visit Benagil Cave from Albufeira?
Yes. Several boat tours leave from Albufeira Marina and follow the coast to Benagil, often with dolphin watching on the way. Landing on the beach inside the cave is not allowed.
Do you need a car in Albufeira?
Not if you stay in or near the old town, where beaches, restaurants and the marina are within walking distance. A car helps for Paderne, Silves and the beaches west of town.
Is Albufeira better than Lagos?
Albufeira has more hotels, more nightlife and is closer to Faro Airport. Lagos has a more historic center and is on the railway. Both are good bases, and the coast between them is easy to explore from either.
