Carvoeiro is a small resort town in the Lagoa area of the central Algarve, built around a beach in a cove between two cliffs. The main things to do are the town beach, the clifftop boardwalk to the rock formations of Algar Seco, the coves nearby and a boat or kayak trip to Benagil Cave. It suits couples and families looking for a quieter base than Albufeira, with Portimão and Lagoa a short drive away.
This guide covers what to see in and around Carvoeiro, the best nearby beaches, day trips, where to stay and how to get there.

Things to Do in Carvoeiro
1. Praia do Carvoeiro and the town
The town beach sits in a cove right in the centre, framed by cliffs, with whitewashed houses on the slopes on both sides and the main square, cafés and restaurants just behind the sand. Fishing boats still pull up on the beach outside the summer months. The centre is small and easy to explore on foot, though the streets climbing out of the cove are steep.
2. The Carvoeiro boardwalk
A wooden boardwalk of about 600 metres runs along the clifftop east of the centre, from the area of the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação chapel and fort to Algar Seco. It is flat and suitable for most visitors, including families with pushchairs, with views along the coast in both directions. It is a popular walk around sunrise and sunset.
3. Algar Seco
At the end of the boardwalk, Algar Seco is a group of eroded limestone formations with arches, small caves, blowholes and natural pools. About 70 steps lead down from the clifftop to the rocks, and the surfaces are uneven, so wear proper shoes. The best-known spot is A Boneca, a small cave with two openings that frame the sea like windows. A bar of the same name sits among the rocks.

Benagil Cave is a few kilometres east along the coast, and the stretch between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra is full of sea caves, arches and small beaches you can only reach by water. Boat tours run from Portimão, Armação de Pêra, Albufeira and Benagil beach itself, and paddleboard and kayak tours leave from Benagil. Since August 2024, swimming into Benagil Cave, landing on its beach and renting kayaks without a guide in the cave area are banned, so book a licensed tour.

5. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail
The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos runs along the clifftops for about 6 km one way, between Praia de Vale Centeanes, on the eastern edge of Carvoeiro, and Praia da Marinha. On the way it passes small valleys that drop to the sea, viewpoints, Praia de Benagil and the opening above Benagil Cave. Allow around 2.5 to 3 hours one way. There is little shade, so start early in summer and carry water.
6. Alfanzina lighthouse
The Farol de Alfanzina, with its red top, stands on the cliffs west of the town and can be reached on foot along the coast. The grounds open only at set visiting times, so check before you go.
7. Lagoa wine
Carvoeiro belongs to the municipality of Lagoa, one of the Algarve's wine areas, and several estates between Lagoa and Silves offer tours and tastings. A tasting makes a good half-day plan away from the beach.

How to Get to Carvoeiro
- From Faro Airport: a rental car or a private transfer is the simplest option, along the A22 motorway, which has had no tolls since 2025. By public transport you need a bus to Lagoa and a local connection to Carvoeiro.
- By train: there is no station in Carvoeiro. The closest are Estômbar-Lagoa and Ferragudo-Parchal on the Algarve line, both a short taxi ride away.
- From Lisbon: drive south on the A2 and then west on the A22, or take the train to Tunes and change for the Algarve line.
Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro
- June to September: warmest sea, most boat departures and the busiest beaches.
- April, May and October: milder weather and fewer people, good for the boardwalk and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Boat trips still run when the sea is calm.
- November to March: quiet, with many restaurants on reduced hours and more boat cancellations, but good walking weather on dry days.
