✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

Portimão is one of the Algarve's main cities, on the Arade River in the western Algarve. Its beach district, Praia da Rocha, has a wide golden beach backed by cliffs and a lively promenade. In the city, walk the old town and riverfront, visit the Portimão Museum in a former sardine cannery and eat grilled sardines by the river. Boat trips to the Benagil caves leave from Portimão, and the villages of Alvor and Ferragudo are a few minutes away.

This guide covers whether Portimão is worth visiting, the top things to do, nearby villages and where to stay.

Is Portimão Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you want a big beach, easy boat trips and a real town rather than a resort. Portimão has a working riverfront, local restaurants and good-value hotels, and Praia da Rocha gives it a wide, well-equipped beach.

  • Pros: a large beach with facilities, boat tours to Benagil, a train station, good-value hotels and quick access to Alvor, Ferragudo and Lagos.
  • Cons: Praia da Rocha is lined with high-rise hotels, and the city center has less old-world charm than Lagos or Tavira.

One or two days cover the highlights. If you want a beach base with a local feel, it also works for a longer stay.

Top Things to Do in Portimão

1. Spend a Day at Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is Portimão's best-known beach, a wide stretch of golden sand below ochre cliffs and rock formations. A promenade above the beach is lined with restaurants, bars and beach clubs that stay busy into the evening. At one end, the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina looks over the beach and the mouth of the Arade River.

2. Explore the Quieter Beaches Nearby

West of Praia da Rocha, a string of smaller beaches sits between the cliffs. Praia dos Três Castelos is reached by a short coastal walk, and Praia do Vau and Praia do Alemão are calmer than the main beach. Further west, Praia dos Três Irmãos and Praia de Alvor have long stretches of sand and rock formations.

3. Take a Boat Trip to the Benagil Caves

Portimão is one of the main departure points for boat trips east along the coast to the Benagil caves and Praia da Marinha. Trips also look for dolphins and explore the smaller caves on the way. Landing on the beach inside Benagil Cave is not allowed, so a boat tour is the way to see it.

4. Visit the Portimão Museum

The Portimão Museum occupies a former sardine cannery on the riverfront. Its exhibits tell the story of the city's fishing and canning industry, alongside archaeology from the region. It is a good choice for a cloudy or very hot day.

5. Walk the Old Town and Riverfront

The old town has pedestrian shopping streets, churches and squares, and the riverside promenade along the Arade is the place for an evening walk. Grilled sardines are the local specialty, served in the restaurants near the river, and the city celebrates them with a sardine festival in summer.

6. Head Inland on a Jeep Safari

Jeep safaris leave Portimão for a full day in the hills and villages behind the coast, a change of scene from the beaches.
