Lagos: The Best All-Round Algarve Town
Lagos combines a walled historic center, forts and churches with some of the Algarve's most photographed beaches, such as Praia de Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. Ponta da Piedade, with its sea arches and grottoes, is just south of town, and the restaurant and bar scene is lively all year. It is also the western end of the Algarve railway.
- Best for: first-time visitors, beaches, food and boat trips.
- Keep in mind: it is the farthest major town from Faro Airport, at 60 to 85 minutes by car, and busy in July and August.

Sagres sits near Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of mainland Europe. The town is small and relaxed, with a fortress, a fishing port, surf schools and beaches facing both the south coast and the Atlantic.
- Best for: surfers, hikers, sunsets and travelers who want quiet.
- Keep in mind: it is about 100 minutes from Faro Airport and often windy, and you will want a car.

Portimão is a working city on the Arade River estuary, with a riverside of fish restaurants and a museum in a former sardine cannery. Its beach district, Praia da Rocha, has a wide sandy beach and a promenade, and the village of Alvor is a few minutes west.
- Best for: value, a local feel and a large beach.
- Keep in mind: Praia da Rocha is built up with high-rise hotels.
Monchique: The Algarve's Mountain Retreat
Monchique is a hill town in the Serra de Monchique, surrounded by forest and walking trails. Nearby are Fóia, at 902 m the highest point in the Algarve, and the spa village of Caldas de Monchique.
- Best for: hiking, views and a cooler break from the coast.
- Keep in mind: it is a day trip for most visitors rather than a beach base.
Silves: Moorish History Inland
Silves was the capital of the Algarve under Moorish rule, and its red sandstone castle and cathedral still dominate the town. It is about 20 minutes inland from the coast and makes an easy half-day trip.
- Best for: history lovers and a quiet half day away from the beaches.
- Keep in mind: there is little to do in the evening, so most people visit rather than stay.
SILVES AND MONCHIQUE TOUR

Carvoeiro: The Prettiest Small Clifftop Village
Carvoeiro is a former fishing village built around a small beach framed by cliffs. A boardwalk leads to the Algar Seco rock formations, and Praia da Marinha and Benagil are a short drive away.
- Best for: couples, photographers and a quieter base near the caves.
- Keep in mind: the village is hilly and has no train station.
Albufeira: The Liveliest and Most Central
Albufeira is the Algarve's largest resort town, with a whitewashed old town above the sea, many beaches and the region's busiest nightlife. It sits in the middle of the coast, so day trips east and west are easy.
- Best for: nightlife, groups of friends and travelers who want lots of choice.
- Keep in mind: some areas are loud at night in summer, and the train station is about 6 km outside town.
Vilamoura: Marina, Golf and Resorts
Vilamoura is a planned resort built around a large marina, with golf courses, waterfront restaurants and Praia da Falésia nearby. It is about 30 minutes from Faro Airport.
- Best for: golf, boating and upscale resort stays.
- Keep in mind: it has no historic old town.
Quarteira: Laid-Back and Good Value
Quarteira, next to Vilamoura, is a former fishing village with a long sandy beach, a seafront promenade and a well-known fish market. It is usually more affordable than its neighbor.
- Best for: families and travelers on a budget who still want to be near the marina and golf.
- Keep in mind: the seafront is lined with apartment blocks.
