How to visit the Benagil Cave, in short

Quick answer: The Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is a sea cave on the central Algarve coast, famous for the circular opening in its roof and the small beach inside. You can only visit it from the water, on a licensed guided tour: a boat tour, or a guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) tour. Under the current rules you cannot disembark onto the cave's beach, cannot paddle in solo, and cannot swim in from nearby beaches.

The Benagil Cave is one of the Algarve's most photographed natural sights. It sits on the coast near the village of Benagil, in the Lagoa area, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. The cave's domed roof has a round opening, often called "the eye", that lets sunlight pour onto a small sandy beach inside. Below is how to see it, the rules you need to know, and the best time to go.

How to get to Benagil

Benagil village is an easy drive in the central Algarve, close to Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Albufeira, with a small parking area that fills quickly in summer. The cave itself is just along the coast from Benagil beach, but you reach it from the sea, not on foot. Tours also depart from nearby marinas and beaches such as Carvoeiro, Portimão, Armação de Pêra, Albufeira and Lagos.

How to visit the cave

There are two main ways to experience the Benagil Cave, and both must be booked with an official operator:

  • Guided boat tour: the most popular option. Boats pass into or right up to the cave so you can see the opening and the beach from the water. Tours range from large catamarans to small, more flexible boats and often combine Benagil with other caves and the cliffs around Praia da Marinha.
  • Guided kayak or SUP tour: a slower, closer way to see the cave, paddling in with a guide when conditions allow. These must be part of an official guided tour, not a solo rental.

Swimming and solo watercraft are no longer allowed (see the rules below), so a tour is the only compliant way in.

The Benagil Cave rules you need to know

Maritime regulations now protect the cave and are actively enforced. Based on the current guidance:

  • No landing on the cave's beach. Disembarking or stepping onto the sand inside the cave is prohibited for everyone, including tour operators.
  • No solo kayaks or paddleboards. You cannot take an unguided kayak or SUP into the cave; paddling visits must be part of an official guided tour.
  • No swimming in. Swimming into the cave from the shore or nearby beaches is banned, due to heavy boat traffic and currents.
  • Fines. Breaking the rules can lead to heavy fines, reported up to around €2,500, enforced by the maritime police.

Rules and enforcement can change from season to season, so check the current regulations and confirm with your operator before you go.

Best time to visit Benagil

  • Season: late spring to early autumn (roughly May to September) usually brings the calmest seas and the most reliable tour schedules. Tours can be cancelled in rough conditions, especially in winter.
  • Time of day: early morning or late afternoon are quieter and the light through the roof opening is at its best around the middle of the day. Going early also helps you avoid the busiest boat traffic.
  • Book ahead: in summer, popular tours sell out, so reserve in advance.

Nearby: make a half-day of it

The same stretch of coast has some of the Algarve's best scenery. Praia da Marinha, one of Portugal's most beautiful beaches, is right next door, and the cliffs and coves around Carvoeiro are a short hop away. Many boat tours combine Benagil with these spots.
