1. Day 1 Arrival in Porto, Car Pick-up & Drive to Douro

   

   Welcome to Portugal! Let’s explore together: pick up your rental car upon arrival at Porto airport and embark on an exciting journey to the Douro Valley, where you'll spend the first nights of this incredible adventure.

   The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, following the scenic A4 route.

   In the afternoon (or during sunset), embark on a tranquil boat trip along the Douro River and discover why it's one of the region's top experiences.    In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, such as the "alheira de Mirandela" (typical Portuguese sausage), "leitão" (roasted suckling pig), or "bacalhau" (codfish), accompanied by a glass of one of the many incredible Douro wines.

2. Day 2 Douro, Portugal

   

   Suggestion for the day: Wineries & Douro Villages

   Visit one (or more!) of the fantastic wineries ("quintas") of the Douro Valley. Many of them offer tours and tastings, so you can learn about the winemaking process and sample some of the region's finest wines. We recommend the following wineries:

   • Quinta do Naval
   • Quinta do Seixo
   • Quinta da Vega Sicilia

   In between winery visits, take some time to explore the charming villages and towns of the Douro Valley. Most of these villages are small and walkable, and they offer a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the region. These are some of the villages worth visiting:

3. Day 3 Drive to Oviedo, Spain

   

   Say goodbye to Portugal (for now) and start your drive to neighboring Spain! Your journey from Douro to Oviedo will take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours via the A-52 route.

   Suggestion for the day: Exploring Historical Oviedo

   • Oviedo Cathedral (Catedral de San Salvador): Explore this stunning Gothic cathedral in the heart of the old town, renowned for its Holy Chamber (Cámara Santa) which houses important religious relics.
   • Old Town (Casco Antiguo): Wander through the charming streets of the old town, admire the well-preserved medieval architecture, and visit landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Fontán Market.
   • Santa María del Naranco: Take a short trip to this pre-Romanesque church, located on the slopes of Mount Naranco. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers panoramic views of Oviedo.
   • San Miguel de Lillo: Close to Santa María del Naranco, this smaller pre-Romanesque church is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth visiting for its historical significance and unique architecture.
   • Campo de San Francisco: Relax in this beautiful, expansive park located in the city center - perfect for a stroll before dinner.
   • Calle Gascona: Known as "Cider Boulevard," this street is lined with traditional sidrerías (cider houses) where you can sample Asturian cider and enjoy local cuisine. It's a great spot for dinner and to experience the local culture.

   After exploring and before returning to your hotel, consider visiting Teatro Campoamor to see a live performance or event, including opera, ballet, and other cultural events.

   End your evening with a visit to this picturesque square, known for its lively atmosphere and historic charm. It's a great place to enjoy a late-night drink and soak up the local ambiance!

4. Day 5 Gijón, Spain

   

   Suggestion for the day: Gijón's Nature & Culture

   Start this day by escaping the city and heading to the stunning Parque del Cerro Santa Catalina for panoramic views of Gijón and the coastline. Afterward, visit the Jardín Botánico Atlántico, a botanical garden showcasing the region's diverse flora.

   Afterward, explore the charming fishing village of Candás, located a short drive from Gijón. Enjoy a stroll along the waterfront, sample fresh seafood, and soak up the local atmosphere.

   You can also visit the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés or explore the Asturias Railway Museum on this day.

   Spend the night in Gijón.

5. Day 6 Drive to Gijón, Spain

   

   Now hit the road and drive to the coastal city of Gijón. This will be a short drive of about 30 minutes following the A-66 route.

   Suggestion for the day: Discovering Gijón, a Coastal Escape

   Start your day with a stroll along the iconic San Lorenzo Beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. Afterward, explore the historic Cimadevilla district, a maze of narrow streets lined with colorful buildings.

   Then, immerse yourself in art and culture at the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, a former industrial complex transformed into a contemporary arts center. Afterward, relax with a drink at the Plaza del Marqués, a lively square perfect for people-watching.

   For the evening, indulge in fresh seafood at one of Gijón's waterfront restaurants, followed by a nightcap at a local bar.

6. Day 6 Drive to Santander, Spain

   

   Goodbye Gijón, hello Santander! This scenic drive will take you about 2 hours via the A-8 route.

   Suggestion for the day: Santander's Coastal Charm and Cultural Delights

   Stroll along the iconic El Sardinero beach, renowned for its golden sands and gentle waves, and then immerse yourself in the city's rich history by visiting the historic center of Cimavilla. Explore its charming streets, admire the colorful buildings, and discover hidden gems.

   Savor a delicious lunch featuring fresh seafood at one of the many waterfront restaurants, and after lunch visit the Magdalena Palace, a stunning royal residence turned cultural center, offering stunning views of the Bay of Santander. If you have time, also check out the Centro Botín, a contemporary art museum designed by Renzo Piano, for a dose of culture and modern art.

   Before returning to your hotel, stroll along the Paseo de Pereda, a tree-lined promenade perfect for people-watching and relaxing, and taste the local cuisine at a traditional Asturian restaurant, sampling delicious tapas and regional specialties.

7. Day 7 Drive to Bilbao, Spain

   

   Embark on the final Spanish leg of your journey with a scenic drive to Bilbao. The trip from Santander to Bilbao spans approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, offering a picturesque route to enjoy along the way.

   Suggestion for the day: A Cultural & Culinary Adventure in Bilbao

   Begin your day at the iconic Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture designed by Frank Gehry. Marvel at the museum's stunning exterior and explore its world-class collection of modern and contemporary art.

   Step back in time as you wander through the enchanting Casco Viejo, Bilbao's historic old town. Lose yourself in a labyrinth of narrow streets, admire the colorful buildings, and soak up the lively atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to visit Plaza Nueva, a bustling square surrounded by traditional Basque bars.

   To finish your day in the best way, indulge in a delightful culinary experience by the waterfront, where you can savor fresh seafood and other local delicacies:

   • Bacalao al Pil-Pil: A classic Basque dish featuring cod cooked in its oil, creating a rich and creamy sauce.

   Then, escape the city bustle and venture into the stunning Basque Countryside. Consider a day trip to the charming coastal town of Getxo, known for its beautiful beaches and traditional Basque architecture. Alternatively, explore the dramatic landscapes of the Basque Coast, home to stunning cliffs and hidden coves.

   Return to Bilbao and relax with a glass of local Txakoli wine at a rooftop bar, enjoying the city's skyline illuminated at night. Indulge in a delicious dinner featuring fresh seafood and local delicacies, such as pintxos (Basque tapas), at one of the city's many charming restaurants.

9. Day 9 Drive to Porto, Portugal

   

   Bid farewell to Spain and start driving to Porto, Portugal, for the last part of this epic journey. The drive from Bilbao to Porto will take between 6 to 7 hours and it's a great opportunity to explore other charming villages along the way such as:

   • Burgos: Known for its impressive Gothic cathedral and historic old town.
   • León: A city with a rich Romanesque heritage, featuring stunning cathedrals and charming plazas.
   • Santiago de Compostela: The final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, offering a blend of history, culture, and spirituality.
   • Vigo: A bustling port city with a lively atmosphere and stunning coastal scenery.

   Start by exploring and walking around downtown Porto and get to know the city's unique highlights! The historic center of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts a rich tapestry of architectural styles reflecting its 2,000-year history.
