Tavira at a glance

Quick answer: Tavira is the eastern Algarve's most charming and authentic town, set on both banks of the Gilão River. Wander the old town and its castle, cross the old bridge, relax on the riverfront, and take the ferry to the long sandy Ilha de Tavira. It is calm and traditional, ideal for a slower trip, and one to two days is plenty.

Unlike the busier resort towns, Tavira keeps a relaxed, traditional feel, with whitewashed houses, tiled façades, and a riverfront made for slow afternoons. It also sits at the eastern end of the Ria Formosa, with island beaches and salt pans nearby. Here is what to see and do, and how to plan your visit.

Top things to do in Tavira

1. The old bridge and riverfront

The much-photographed arched bridge over the Gilão River links the two halves of the town. The riverfront on both sides, with its gardens, cafés and the Praça da República, is the heart of Tavira.

2. Tavira Castle and the old town

Climb to the ruins of Tavira Castle for a garden and panoramic views over the town's rooftops and church towers. Around it, the old town is a maze of cobbled lanes and historic churches, including the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo.

3. Ilha de Tavira (island beach)

Tavira's beach sits on a long sandbar island in the Ria Formosa, reached by a short ferry from the town or from Quatro Águas. It offers kilometres of soft sand, dunes and calm water, with seasonal cafés.

4. The salt pans and Ria Formosa

The salt pans around Tavira are part of the eastern Ria Formosa and a great spot to see birdlife, including flamingos. Boat trips and walks explore the lagoon, channels and islands.

5. Food and local life

Tavira is known for its relaxed dining, fresh seafood and traditional Algarve flavours. The nearby village of Santa Luzia is famous for octopus, and a weekly market brings local produce to town.

How to get to Tavira

Tavira is about a 35 to 40 minute drive east of Faro Airport. It is also on the Algarve train line between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, so it is easy to reach without a car, and the town itself is walkable. For the wider picture, see our guide on how to get to the Algarve.

Best time to visit Tavira

Spring and early autumn are mild, pleasant and quieter, ideal for the old town and the salt pans. Summer is warmest and best for the island beach, but busier. For where to base yourself across the region, see our guide on where to stay in the Algarve.
