What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an entry requirement the European Union is introducing for travelers who do not need a visa. Before your trip, you will fill in a short online form with your passport details and answer a few security and travel questions. It works much like the ESTA for the United States or the eTA for Canada. ETIAS is not a visa: it does not change how long you can stay, which remains up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and it does not guarantee entry. Border officers still make the final decision when you arrive.

When Does ETIAS Start?
There is no confirmed date. ETIAS has been postponed several times, mainly because it depends on the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES), which only became fully operational on April 10, 2026. The EU had said ETIAS was expected in the last quarter of 2026, but as of October 2026 no start date has been announced and the system is not accepting applications.
What we know about the timeline:
- Advance notice: the EU has said it will announce the start date at least six months before ETIAS begins.
- Transition period: after launch, there will be a period in which ETIAS is required but travelers without one can still be allowed in if they meet the other entry conditions.
- So in practice: a trip in the coming months does not need ETIAS. Check the official EU website a few weeks before you fly, and we will update this guide as soon as a date is confirmed.

Do You Need ETIAS for Portugal?
Not yet. Once ETIAS is in operation, you will need it if you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Australia, and you are visiting Portugal or another ETIAS country for a short stay. You will not need it if you hold an EU passport or a residence permit or visa for a Schengen country.
One authorization will cover all 30 ETIAS countries, so you will not need a separate one for Spain, France or Italy on the same trip.
How Will the Application Work?
- Go to the official site or app. Applications will be made only through the official ETIAS website or app published by the EU.
- Fill in the form. You will need your passport, an email address and a payment card. The form asks for personal and passport details, your job and education, and a few security questions.
- Pay the fee. The EU has set the fee at €20.
- Wait for the answer by email. The authorization is linked electronically to your passport, so there is nothing to print.
- Travel with the same passport. If you renew your passport, you will need a new ETIAS.
Apply well before your trip. The EU has said most applications should be processed quickly, but some may take longer if more information is needed. Once ETIAS starts, we recommend applying as soon as your flights are booked.

Avoid Unofficial ETIAS Websites
Many websites already offer ETIAS applications, sometimes for much more than the official fee. Since ETIAS is not in operation, any site taking ETIAS payments today is not official. The EU says travelers may use an intermediary once ETIAS starts, but advises checking their service, extra charges and how they protect your data. The safest option is always the official EU website.
