Today, you'll set out on a circular hiking trail that begins right at your accommodation. This route weaves through landscapes steeped in history and culture. In the Middle Ages, Cidadelhe was one of the few self-governed Beetrias—unique communities where leaders were elected by the people. Among its notable figures was Dom Afonso, son of King João II.
Along the trail, you’ll encounter several historical landmarks, including Casa do Paço, once home to an influential local figure, and Casa do Outeiro, a splendid 18th-century baroque manor house bearing a noble coat of arms. The path continues to the Chapel of São Gonçalo and the ancient hillfort of Cidadelhe, then follows the Seromenha River upstream to the Moinho Bridge.
From there, the trail winds through Portela, passes the Parish Church of Oliveira, and crosses the villages of Santa Bárbara and Fundo do Povo (Entrevinhas). In Oliveira, the standout is the Igreja Matriz, a classified monument showcasing exquisite baroque and rococo gilded woodcarving.
On the return, you'll cross the Seromenha stream via the Martinhos Bridge, a historic crossing once traversed by the troops of Junius Brutus during the assault on the Civitadella in 134 BC.
Throughout the hike, you’ll be surrounded by the terraced vineyards of the Upper Douro, carved into deep valleys flanked by plateaus and rolling hills. The views over the Seromenha valley and glimpses of the distant Douro River provide a stunning natural backdrop.
