Porto: Highlights Tour

The Portugal Getaways Porto Highlights Tour includes round-trip flights, 6 nights of hotel accommodation in Porto, airport transfers on arrival and departure, 3 guided tours (the Essential Walking Tour, the Aveiro Half Day Tour and the Douro Valley Full Day Tour) and all taxes and fees related to the booking. Breakfast, additional tours and city taxes are not included. Hotel pick-up is not included for the tours, and no rental car is needed.

• Essential Walking Tour. A guided walk through Porto's UNESCO-listed historic center, with stops at the Clérigos Church, São Bento Train Station, the Sé Cathedral, the Fernandina Wall and the Ribeira waterfront, finishing across the Luís I Bridge. It runs 10 AM to 1 PM or 3 PM to 6 PM. Hotel pick-up is not included. Meeting point: Gomes Teixeira Square, 4050-526, near the lion's fountain.
• Aveiro Half Day Tour. A half-day guided tour of about 4 hours to Aveiro, with a walk through the city center, a 45-minute boat cruise on the canals with a tasting of Ovos Moles (a local sweet pastry) and a stop at Costa Nova beach. It runs 8:30 AM to 1 PM or 2 PM to 6:30 PM, with transport in an air-conditioned vehicle. Hotel pick-up is not included. Meeting point: Largo Miguel Bombarda, next to Porto Cruz, 4400-222 Vila Nova de Gaia.
• Douro Valley Full Day Tour. A full day in the world's first demarcated wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from 8:30 AM to 6 PM. It includes two vineyards with wine tastings, a one-hour Douro River cruise and lunch at a winery, with a professional guide and an air-conditioned minivan. Hotel pick-up is not included. Meeting point: Largo da Lapa 1, 4050-069 Porto.

On foot. The hotels in this package were selected to be up to about a 20-minute walk from the tour meeting points, so you can walk to each tour without hotel pick-up. The Essential Walking Tour meets at Gomes Teixeira Square, near the lion's fountain, and the Douro Valley tour at Largo da Lapa. The Aveiro tour meets at Largo Miguel Bombarda in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Luís I Bridge from Ribeira. If you prefer not to walk, a taxi takes only a few minutes.

No. The three included tours start at meeting points that are up to about a 20-minute walk from the hotels selected for this package, and hotel pick-up is not included. The Aveiro and Douro Valley tours include transport from the meeting point. Airport transfers on arrival and departure are included, and Porto's center is compact and walkable, so a car is not needed for this trip.

The package includes 4 and 5-star hotels in Porto, with the 5-star options as upgrades. The price varies depending on the hotel you select. Properties are not all in the historic center, but the tour meeting points are up to about a 20-minute walk from the hotels selected for this package. Yes. If you prefer to explore the Douro Valley independently, Portugal has a scenic train line from Porto São Bento or Campanhã stations that follows the river through the valley. The journey to Pinhão takes approximately 2 hours and is one of the most scenic train rides in Europe. The included Douro Valley tour is a more comprehensive experience with vineyard visits, a river cruise, and lunch included, but the independent train option is a popular alternative for travelers who prefer to explore at their own pace. Yes. If one of the three included experiences does not suit your interests or physical ability, contact the Portugal Getaways team before booking and we will discuss alternatives. Some tours can be swapped for a different experience in Porto or a day trip to a nearby destination. We will do our best to adjust the programme to fit your preferences.

All three included tours are light to moderate and suitable for most fitness levels. The Essential Walking Tour covers cobblestone streets and some hillside terrain over about 3 hours, so comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. The Aveiro Half Day Tour combines light walking in the city center with a boat cruise. The Douro Valley tour involves light walking at the vineyards and is not physically demanding. Spring (April to June) offers mild temperatures around 17°C to 22°C (63°F to 72°F), fewer crowds, and lush green scenery in the Douro Valley. Summer (July to August) reaches 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), the busiest and most expensive period with longer days and festival season in the city. Autumn (September to October) is one of the best windows, with warm temperatures around 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), the grape harvest in the Douro Valley, and fewer tourists than summer. Winter (November to March) averages 10°C to 14°C (50°F to 57°F), quieter, significantly more affordable, and ideal for the food tour and wine experiences when the city belongs to locals.

The Portugal Getaways team can add nights in Porto, include a day trip to Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, or the Douro Valley by train, extend the stay, or build a wider Portugal itinerary combining Porto with Lisbon or the Algarve. Yes. The package price is based on two travelers sharing a room. Solo travelers pay a single supplement. Porto is part of Portugal, consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Europe for travelers, with no active conflicts and not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere. Standard precautions apply in busy tourist areas. Canadian passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. ETIAS is not yet mandatory. 

The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled before your travel date in accordance with the Portugal Getaways cancellation terms (14 days). Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is strongly recommended.
