Summers are hot, especially in the Alentejo region; winters are quiet and budget-friendly, though some attractions may have reduced hours.

Daily drives are manageable and scenic - typically between 35 minutes and 2.5 hours per leg, covering roughly 400–500 km in total. The longest drive is from Tomar to Évora (approximately 2.5 hours), and the roads throughout are well-maintained and easy to navigate.

The roads between Sintra, Óbidos, Tomar, Évora, Monsaraz, and Lisbon are well-maintained and clearly signed. Traffic drives on the right, the same as in the U.S. and Canada. The route combines scenic countryside roads and easy access to historic town centers, making it a relaxed and rewarding drive throughout.

The package includes a standard economy, manual transmission car. Upgrades to a larger vehicle or automatic transmission are available on request. Contact our team when booking to discuss your options or if you need help reviewing fees and insurance coverage.

A valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license or passport is accepted to rent a car in Portugal - an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not mandatory, though it can be a useful backup. Tolls are not included in the package - Portugal uses electronic Via Verde tolls, typically billed to your credit card via a transponder in the rental car.

The rental car included in this package comes with basic third-party liability insurance. Depending on the rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included, but most rentals still carry a mandatory excess. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available at pickup. This can be arranged through the Portugal Getaways team when booking.

Yes - Portugal Getaways offers a wide range of optional add-ons for this itinerary, including skip-the-line tickets to Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, guided walking tours in Óbidos and Tomar, wine tastings and winery visits near Évora, a boat trip on Alqueva Lake from Monsaraz, and Fado dinners and city tours in Lisbon. Cars are not permitted inside the walled village of Óbidos. You park outside the walls at the designated car parks near the main gate and explore the village on foot. The village is small and fully walkable. Parking outside the walls is straightforward and free in most areas. This is one of the things that makes Óbidos special - no traffic inside the walls.

Monsaraz is a walled hilltop village with fewer than 200 permanent residents and views over Alqueva Lake, Europe's largest artificial lake. The village has been preserved almost exactly as it was in the medieval period. It is also part of the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best stargazing destinations in Europe. On a clear night, the sky above Monsaraz is extraordinary. An overnight stay is the only way to experience both the sunset over the lake and the night sky. Day-trippers miss both.

Breakfast may be included, though hotels with complimentary breakfast can be prioritized -  just contact us or check the rate at booking. Any other meals are not included, giving you the freedom to explore Portugal's excellent local restaurants at your own pace. From Sintra's traditional pastry shops to Alentejo's hearty cuisine and Lisbon's vibrant food scene, the culinary journey is very much part of the experience.

The package includes typically 3 to 4-star standard hotels selected along the route. Properties are not necessarily located in town centres - they are chosen for their proximity to the key highlights of each destination, whether that's Sintra's palaces, Évora's UNESCO-listed historic centre, or Lisbon's neighborhoods. The package can be customized to upgrade hotels or change properties and locations to better suit your preferences - additional costs may apply.

No. City taxes are not included and are paid directly at each hotel.

Portugal is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Europe for travelers, with no active conflicts and not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere.
