The Algarve's most photographed beaches are the small coves between Lagos and Albufeira, such as Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Praia da Marinha. For long walks and space, choose Praia da Falésia, Meia Praia or Praia de Alvor. Families do well at Praia do Barril and Praia de Alvor, and surfers head to the west coast at Arrifana and Odeceixe. Many of the cove beaches have steep stairs and small car parks, so arrive early in summer.
This guide groups the 15 best beaches by region, with access, facilities and who each beach suits.

Lagos and the Western Algarve
Praia de Dona Ana, Lagos
Dona Ana is a sheltered cove of golden cliffs and clear water, one of the best beaches in the Algarve for calm swimming and snorkeling. Two sets of stairs lead down from the car park, and there is a beach bar and restaurant on the sand.
- Good to know: the car park holds 70 to 80 cars and fills early in summer. Showers, toilets and seasonal sunbeds are available.
Praia do Camilo, Lagos
Camilo is a small cove surrounded by rock formations, reached by a long wooden staircase of more than 200 steps.
- Good to know: there are no facilities on the sand, but a restaurant with sea views sits at the top of the stairs. Parking is limited.
Praia dos Estudantes, Lagos
This small beach is a short walk from the town center and is known for the stone arch that links its two sections. It is quieter than the main town beaches.
- Good to know: a staircase leads to the sand and there are no facilities on the beach. It shrinks at high tide, so go at low tide.
Meia Praia, Lagos
Meia Praia stretches for about 5.5 km east of Lagos, with calm, shallow water that suits children and water sports. The western and central sections have bars, restaurants and loungers, while the eastern end is quieter.
- Good to know: lifeguards cover the main areas in season. The eastern end has no facilities.
⛵ PONTA DA PIEDADE CAVES BY BOAT
Combine a Lagos beach day with a boat trip from Lagos Marina around the caves and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade.
See the boat tour →Praia da Arrifana, near Aljezur
Arrifana is a cliff-backed bay on the Atlantic west coast, with the remains of a fortress above it. It has waves for most of the year and several surf schools.
- Good to know: you park on top of the cliffs and walk down a steep road. Lifeguards are on duty in peak season.
Praia de Odeceixe, west coast
Odeceixe, at the northern edge of the Algarve, is a wide beach where a river meets the ocean, with cliffs behind it and the village a short drive inland. Surfers use the ocean side, while families often stay near the river.
- Good to know: the Atlantic here is stronger than on the south coast, so swim only where lifeguards are present.
Carvoeiro, Benagil and Lagoa
Praia da Marinha, Lagoa
Marinha is a small beach framed by orange limestone cliffs and sea stacks, with clear water for snorkeling. It is also the end point of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Benagil.
- Good to know: a steep footpath leads down from the car park, so wear sturdy shoes.
Praia de Benagil, Lagoa
This small beach next to the village is the main departure point for boat, kayak and paddleboard tours to Benagil Cave.
- Good to know: the road down is steep and parking is limited. Swimming to the cave is banned because of currents and boat traffic, and landing on the beach inside the cave is not allowed.
BENAGIL CAVE BOAT TOUR
A 2-hour boat trip from Portimão along the coast to the Benagil caves.
See the Benagil tour →Praia da Albandeira, Lagoa
Albandeira is a quiet cove with rock formations and a natural arch that is popular with photographers.
- Good to know: it is a short walk from the car park, with a small beach bar nearby and limited facilities.
Praia do Carvalho, Lagoa
Carvalho is a hidden cove reached through a tunnel carved into the rock, with golden sand and tall cliffs.
- Good to know: there are no sunbed rentals or large bars, so bring an umbrella, water and snacks. Lifeguards are on duty in peak season.
Portimão and Alvor
Praia da Rocha, Portimão
Praia da Rocha is a wide, busy beach below cliffs, backed by a promenade of restaurants, bars and beach clubs that stay lively in the evening.
- Good to know: there are several car parks, showers, toilets, sunbed rental and lifeguards in summer.
Praia dos Três Irmãos, Alvor
The beach is named after three rocks that rise from the sand, and it mixes open shoreline with small coves. At low tide you can walk through rock passages to smaller beaches.
- Good to know: parking, boardwalks, seasonal sunbeds, lifeguards and several restaurants are available.
Praia de Alvor, Alvor
Alvor's beach is long and wide, with calm water next to the fishing village. Wooden boardwalks cross the dunes, which makes it one of the easiest beaches for strollers and reduced mobility.
- Good to know: there is plenty of parking, lifeguards in season and several beach restaurants.
Albufeira and the Eastern Algarve
Praia da Falésia, Albufeira
Falésia runs for more than 6 km below red and orange cliffs between Albufeira and Vilamoura. Its length means you can always find space, and it is one of the best beaches in the Algarve for long walks.
- Good to know: there are several car parks with walkways to the sand, sunbed rental, beach bars and lifeguards in peak months.
Praia do Barril, Tavira
Barril is on Ilha de Tavira, inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You reach it on foot over a bridge or on a small tourist train from Pedras d'El Rei. Behind the beach, the Anchor Cemetery displays hundreds of old anchors from the area's tuna fishing past.
- Good to know: the water is calm and the sand is soft, which makes it a strong choice for families. Restaurants and lifeguards operate in season.
