About the Experience

The buildings where Blandy's Wine Lodge is located today, in the center of Funchal, began to be purchased by John Blandy in the mid-19th century, and since then have been the heart of the family's wine business, where more than 650 barrels and vats, aging the best Madeira wines in the traditional canteiro method.

Each of the Wine Lodge's aging rooms has its own character, and due to the different temperatures and humidity, the wines all have different aging profiles based on their location. The eastern warehouse houses wines dating back to the 1920s, and the family's private collection is kept within thick stone walls below the ground floor.

The museum houses artefacts that include letters from Sir. Winston Churchill, coins from Blandy’s Bank and the oldest wooden mill on the island, dating back to the 17th century.

In the emblematic Vintage room, cathedral of the rarest and oldest wines of Madeira, you will find “frasqueiras” wines, some of them from the beginning of the 20th century, such as Blandy’s Bual 1920 and here you will taste 6 glasses of wine paired with dried fruits; cheese; chocolate, honey cake:
