The best time to visit the Algarve, in short
When to go, by what you want
- Beach and swimming: June to September, when the sea is warmest (up to about 22°C in August) and the weather is reliably hot and dry.
- Hiking, golf and sightseeing: spring and autumn, with comfortable temperatures and green scenery, and none of the summer heat or crowds.
- Fewer crowds and lower prices: late spring, early autumn and winter. July and August are the busiest and most expensive.
- Winter sun and golf: December to February is mild, quiet and cheap, though the sea is cool and it is the wettest time.
Season by season
Spring (March to May)
One of the best times to go. Days warm from the high teens into the low twenties, the countryside is green and flowering, and resorts are quiet. Perfect for the coastal trails, golf and exploring, though the sea is still cool for long swims.
Summer (June to September)
Peak season: hot, dry and reliably sunny, with the warmest sea of the year. July and August are the busiest and priciest, best booked well ahead. June and September give you summer conditions with a little more room and better value.
Autumn (September to November)
Early autumn is a sweet spot, keeping summer warmth and a warm sea but with fewer people after mid-September. By November it turns milder and wetter, but stays pleasant and very quiet.
Winter (December to February)
Mild by European standards, with daytime highs around 16 to 17°C, but the wettest, greenest season and a cool sea. Great for golf, walking and a low-season break at the lowest prices of the year.
The Algarve is easy to reach, whenever you go
The Algarve is a short hop from Lisbon (about 2.5 to 3 hours by car or train) and well served by direct flights into Faro. If you are planning the journey, see our guide to how to get to the Algarve. For detailed temperatures and a month-by-month breakdown, see the Algarve weather guide.
