Lisbon is one of Europe's most accessible destinations — but before you start packing your bags, it's worth spending a few minutes understanding the entry requirements for Portugal. Whether you need a visa, how long you can stay, what documents to carry, and what to expect at the border are all questions worth answering before you travel.
This guide covers the essentials for the most common traveler nationalities. As always, entry requirements can change — we recommend double-checking with the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in your country before you fly.

Is Portugal Part of the Schengen Area?
Yes. Portugal is a full member of the Schengen Area, which means that once you enter Portugal, you can travel freely to any other Schengen country without additional passport checks. This is great news if you're combining Lisbon with a trip to Spain, France, Italy, or other European destinations.
The Schengen Area currently includes 27 European countries. The 90/180-day rule applies across the entire Schengen zone — not just Portugal — which is important to keep in mind if you're also visiting other European countries on the same trip.
Good to know: Schengen membership means a single entry is valid across 27 countries, making Portugal a perfect gateway for a wider European adventure.
Do You Need a Visa to Visit Portugal?
United States & Canada
Citizens of the United States and Canada do not need a visa to enter Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You can enter for tourism, visiting friends or family, or short business trips without applying in advance. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area.
United Kingdom
Following Brexit, UK citizens no longer travel under EU rules. However, British passport holders can still enter Portugal and the wider Schengen Area visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The same passport validity requirements apply.
Australia & New Zealand
Citizens of Australia and New Zealand can enter Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, for tourism or short visits. No pre-application is required.
Other Nationalities
Many other nationalities — including those from Brazil, Argentina, South Korea, Japan, and Mexico — also benefit from visa-free access to Portugal. Citizens of countries that do not have a visa-waiver agreement with the Schengen Area will need to apply for a Schengen visa before travel. Check with the Portuguese Embassy or your local authorities for the current status of your nationality.

What Is ETIAS, and Do You Need It for Portugal?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an upcoming travel authorization scheme for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen Area. It works similarly to the US ESTA or Canada's eTA — a pre-travel screening process that does not replace a visa but will be required before boarding.
As of 2026, ETIAS has not yet been fully launched. Once it is operational, travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the US, Canada, UK, and Australia) will need to apply online before their trip. The process is expected to be quick, low-cost, and mostly automatic.
We recommend checking the latest ETIAS status before your trip to Lisbon, as the launch date has been delayed several times. Portugal Getaways keeps all our travelers informed of any entry requirement changes that affect their bookings.
Good to know: ETIAS is expected to cost around €7 and be valid for three years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
What Documents Do You Need to Enter Portugal?
When traveling to Lisbon, make sure you have the following:
- Valid passport — ensure it does not expire within three months of your return date from the Schengen Area. Ideally, have at least six months of validity remaining.
- Proof of onward travel — a return flight or evidence of your next destination. Immigration officers may ask to see this.
- Proof of accommodation — hotel bookings, a vacation package confirmation, or a letter from your host. Portugal Getaways sends all guests a comprehensive booking confirmation that works perfectly for this purpose.
- Proof of sufficient funds — while rarely checked for tourists from visa-exempt countries, the general guideline is approximately €75 per day.
- Travel insurance — not legally required but strongly recommended. Portugal Getaways includes travel protection with all packages.
- ETIAS authorization — once the system is operational (check before you travel).
- Schengen visa — only if required for your nationality.
Best for: Travelers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia — entry is straightforward. A valid passport and return ticket is all most visitors need.
Entering Portugal: What to Expect at Lisbon Airport
Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (IATA: LIS) is the main international gateway to the city. It is a modern, well-organized airport with efficient immigration processing. Most travelers from non-EU countries will pass through passport control on arrival, where an officer will check your documents and may ask a few routine questions about your trip.
The process is typically quick for travelers from visa-exempt countries. EU and Schengen-area passport holders use fast-track lanes with automated e-gates. Non-EU travelers queue at the standard passport control desks. Lines can be longer in peak summer months (July and August), so factor in extra time if you have a connecting journey.
From the airport to Lisbon city center, you have several easy options: the Metro (Line Red, around 20 minutes to Oriente or Marquês de Pombal), licensed taxis, or rideshare apps. Many Portugal Getaways packages include airport transfers, so you can step off the plane and head straight to your hotel.
Good to know: Lisbon Airport is just 7 km from the city center — one of the most conveniently located international airports in Europe.
The excitement of a trip just beginning — friends, luggage, and good vibes ahead.
Health & Travel Insurance for Portugal
Portugal has an excellent public healthcare system. EU citizens can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for necessary medical treatment during their stay. Non-EU travelers — including those from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia — are advised to take out comprehensive travel insurance before their trip, covering medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and lost luggage.
All Portugal Getaways vacation packages include travel protection as standard. If you want additional coverage — particularly for pre-existing conditions or trip cancellation for any reason — we also offer the option to add Allianz travel insurance to your booking.
Best for: All travelers. Even with a healthy, low-risk trip planned, unexpected medical costs in a foreign country can be significant. Travel insurance gives you peace of mind from the moment you book.
