Lagos

Monchique
Head inland and up into the green Monchique hills for cooler air, forest, viewpoints from Fóia, and the spa village of Caldas de Monchique. A refreshing contrast to the coast.
Benagil and the caves
The famous Benagil sea cave and the coast around Carvoeiro and Lagoa make a classic day out, best combined with a boat, kayak or paddleboard tour.
Day trips further afield
With an early start, you can go beyond the Algarve for the day:
- Seville, Spain: about 2 to 2.5 hours east across the border, for a taste of Andalusia, the cathedral and the old town. Note Spain is one hour ahead.
- Lisbon: around 2.5 to 3 hours north, a long but doable day for Portugal's capital, better as an overnight if you can.
- Évora: about 2 hours into the Alentejo, a UNESCO-listed town with a Roman temple and a chapel of bones.
These longer trips are easiest by car or on an organised tour that handles the driving.
