When is the best time to visit Madeira, in short
Madeira sits in the Atlantic, about 90 minutes by plane south of Lisbon. Thanks to the warm Canary Current and Gulf Stream, it has a gentle subtropical climate with small differences between seasons. You will also find microclimates: the south coast (Funchal) is drier and more sheltered than the greener, wetter north. Below is a month-by-month guide, then what to expect each season and the best time for specific activities.

What to expect each season
Spring in Madeira (March to June)
Known as the "island of eternal spring", this is arguably the perfect season to explore. The weather is warm and comfortable, ideal for light clothing, though it is wise to pack a layer and a light raincoat for the occasional shower. The island bursts into bloom, and in spring Funchal hosts its annual Flower Festival, when the streets fill with colourful floral displays, parades and festivities. It is a great time for the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest, the Funchal Botanical Garden, and the levada walking trails.
Summer in Madeira (June to September)
Summer brings warm weather, blue skies and calm seas, ideal for the coast: natural ocean pools, black sand beaches, and the white sands of nearby Porto Santo. Temperatures are pleasant rather than scorching, moderated by the surrounding Atlantic. It is the best season for whale and dolphin watching, and for water activities like surfing, diving, snorkelling and paddleboarding. It is also the busiest time, so book ahead.
Autumn in Madeira (September to November)
With the summer rush fading, September and October are excellent for a calmer trip. Temperatures stay mild, ideal for hiking the levadas and exploring villages and viewpoints without the summer crowds. Autumn is wine season, when the island celebrates its famous Madeira wine with harvest events and tastings. It is also a strong season for food, from fresh seafood to traditional espetada (grilled meat skewers).
Winter in Madeira (December to February)
Madeira is a popular winter escape thanks to its mild subtropical climate, with comfortable daytime temperatures and a mix of sunny days and occasional rain that keeps the landscapes lush. Funchal lights up for Christmas and stages one of the world's most spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks displays. It is also a quieter time for museums, historic sites and cultural visits.
Best time for specific trips
- Hiking the levadas: late spring and early autumn (May to June, September to October) for warm, drier, comfortable days. Summer is also good; mountains are cooler than the coast.
- Beaches and swimming: July to September, when the sea is at its warmest and rain is least likely.
- Whale and dolphin watching: late spring through autumn, with summer a high point.
- Festivals: the Flower Festival in spring, wine celebrations around the late-summer to autumn harvest, Carnival in winter, and the New Year's Eve fireworks. Exact dates change each year, so check the current calendar before booking.
- Fewer crowds and better value: April, and November, sit between the busy and festive periods.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Madeira
What month is the best to visit Madeira?
For warm, comfortable weather with fewer crowds, May and September stand out. July and August are the warmest and best for beaches, but also the busiest. Madeira is mild all year, so the "best" month depends on what you want to do.
What is the rainy season in Madeira?
The wettest months are October to December, while July and August are the driest. Rain is usually heaviest on the green north coast; Funchal and the south are drier.
What is the hottest month in Madeira?
August is the warmest, with average highs around 27°C (80°F), closely followed by September.
Is Madeira warm in winter?
Yes. Winter daytime temperatures in Funchal average around 20 to 21°C (68 to 70°F), with a mix of sun and occasional rain, which is why Madeira is a popular winter-sun escape.
Azores or Madeira: which has better weather?
Madeira is generally warmer, drier and more stable, especially in Funchal, which makes it the easier choice for reliable sun. The Azores are greener and cooler, with more changeable, showery weather. For warmth and beaches, choose Madeira.
When is the cheapest time to visit Madeira?
The quieter shoulder and low seasons, broadly November to March (outside Christmas and New Year), tend to be better value than the summer and festive peaks.
