When is the best time to visit Madeira, in short

Quick answer: Madeira is mild all year, which is why it is called the "island of eternal spring". The sweet spot is spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October): warm, comfortable and quieter. July to September is the warmest and busiest, best for beaches and whale watching. Winter is mild and festive, with the famous New Year's Eve fireworks, but it is the wettest stretch.

Madeira sits in the Atlantic, about 90 minutes by plane south of Lisbon. Thanks to the warm Canary Current and Gulf Stream, it has a gentle subtropical climate with small differences between seasons. You will also find microclimates: the south coast (Funchal) is drier and more sheltered than the greener, wetter north. Below is a month-by-month guide, then what to expect each season and the best time for specific activities.

Month Avg high Avg low Rainfall Good for

February 20°C (68°F) 14°C (57°F) 72 mm Carnival, mild days
March 21°C (69°F) 14°C (58°F) 62 mm Spring blooms begin, fewer crowds
April 21°C (70°F) 15°C (59°F) 45 mm Mild, green, good-value shoulder season
May 22°C (72°F) 16°C (61°F) 27 mm Flower Festival, warm and drier
June 24°C (75°F) 18°C (65°F) 8 mm Warm, dry, excellent hiking
July 25°C (78°F) 20°C (68°F) 2 mm Beaches, whale watching, driest
August 27°C (80°F) 21°C (69°F) 1 mm Warmest and busiest, beach season
September 27°C (80°F) 20°C (69°F) 23 mm Warm, calmer, one of the best months
October 25°C (77°F) 19°C (67°F) 91 mm Wine harvest season, warm but wetter
November 23°C (73°F) 17°C (63°F) 80 mm Mild, quiet, greener landscapes
December 21°C (70°F) 16°C (60°F) 95 mm Christmas lights and New Year's Eve fireworks

The driest months are clearly July and August; the wettest are October to December. Even so, Madeira rarely sees extreme heat or cold, so any month works depending on what you want to do.

What to expect each season

Spring in Madeira (March to June)

Known as the "island of eternal spring", this is arguably the perfect season to explore. The weather is warm and comfortable, ideal for light clothing, though it is wise to pack a layer and a light raincoat for the occasional shower. The island bursts into bloom, and in spring Funchal hosts its annual Flower Festival, when the streets fill with colourful floral displays, parades and festivities. It is a great time for the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest, the Funchal Botanical Garden, and the levada walking trails.

Summer in Madeira (June to September)

Summer brings warm weather, blue skies and calm seas, ideal for the coast: natural ocean pools, black sand beaches, and the white sands of nearby Porto Santo. Temperatures are pleasant rather than scorching, moderated by the surrounding Atlantic. It is the best season for whale and dolphin watching, and for water activities like surfing, diving, snorkelling and paddleboarding. It is also the busiest time, so book ahead.

Autumn in Madeira (September to November)

With the summer rush fading, September and October are excellent for a calmer trip. Temperatures stay mild, ideal for hiking the levadas and exploring villages and viewpoints without the summer crowds. Autumn is wine season, when the island celebrates its famous Madeira wine with harvest events and tastings. It is also a strong season for food, from fresh seafood to traditional espetada (grilled meat skewers).

Winter in Madeira (December to February)

Madeira is a popular winter escape thanks to its mild subtropical climate, with comfortable daytime temperatures and a mix of sunny days and occasional rain that keeps the landscapes lush. Funchal lights up for Christmas and stages one of the world's most spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks displays. It is also a quieter time for museums, historic sites and cultural visits.

Best time for specific trips

  • Hiking the levadas: late spring and early autumn (May to June, September to October) for warm, drier, comfortable days. Summer is also good; mountains are cooler than the coast.
  • Beaches and swimming: July to September, when the sea is at its warmest and rain is least likely.
  • Whale and dolphin watching: late spring through autumn, with summer a high point.
  • Festivals: the Flower Festival in spring, wine celebrations around the late-summer to autumn harvest, Carnival in winter, and the New Year's Eve fireworks. Exact dates change each year, so check the current calendar before booking.
  • Fewer crowds and better value: April, and November, sit between the busy and festive periods.
