The Algarve is compact enough that most of it is within a day trip of wherever you stay. From Lagos, head west to Sagres and Cape St Vincent. From Albufeira, the Benagil caves, Silves and Loulé are all close. From Faro, the train reaches Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, where a ferry crosses to Spain. With an early start, Seville, Évora and Lisbon also work as long day trips.
This guide groups the best day trips by where you are based, shows which ones work without a car and covers the longer trips beyond the Algarve.

Day Trips from Lagos
Lagos is the best base for the western Algarve, where the coast turns wilder and the towns get smaller.
Sagres and Cape St Vincent
Sagres sits near the south-western tip of mainland Portugal, about half an hour's drive from Lagos. Visit the Fortaleza de Sagres on its headland, the surf beaches around the town and Cape St Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente), a few kilometres further west, where the lighthouse stands on cliffs above the Atlantic. Stay for sunset at the cape, the most popular time to be there.
GRAND LAGOS AND CAPE ST VINCENT TOUR
A full-day guided tour of Lagos, Sagres and Cape St Vincent, with time at Ponta da Piedade and the old town of Lagos.
See the tour →The west coast and Costa Vicentina
North of Sagres, the Atlantic coast belongs to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Beaches such as Praia da Bordeira at Carrapateira, Praia do Amado and Praia da Arrifana near Aljezur are wide, wild and popular with surfers. Expect bigger waves and cooler water than on the south coast.
Ponta da Piedade and the coast by boat
Ponta da Piedade, just south of Lagos town, is close enough for half a day. Walk the clifftop paths and staircases, or see the arches and grottoes from the water on a boat or kayak trip from Lagos Marina, where dolphin-watching trips also depart.
Day Trips from Albufeira
Albufeira is in the middle of the coast, so it works well for both directions.
Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha
The sea caves around Benagil are around half an hour west of Albufeira. Boat tours leave from Albufeira Marina, or you can drive to Benagil and join a kayak or paddleboard tour there. Since August 2024 swimming into Benagil Cave and landing on its beach are banned, so a licensed tour is the only way inside. Add Praia da Marinha and a stretch of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail to make a full day of it.
CAVES & DOLPHINS FROM ALBUFEIRA
A boat trip from Albufeira Marina along the coast to the Benagil caves, with dolphin spotting on the way.
See the boat trip →Silves and Monchique
Silves, inland from Portimão, was the capital of the Algarve under Moorish rule, and its red sandstone castle and cathedral still dominate the town. Further north, the Serra de Monchique rises to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve, with views down to the coast on clear days. The two combine well in a single day, and the vineyards around Silves and Lagoa add a wine tasting.
SILVES AND MONCHIQUE TOUR
A full-day guided tour to the castle town of Silves and the Serra de Monchique, with the views from Fóia.
See the tour →Loulé
Loulé is an inland market town a short drive from Faro and Vilamoura, or about 40 minutes by Vamus bus from Faro. Its train station is about 5 km south of the centre, so the bus is the easier option. Its red-domed market hall in the centre sells fish, fruit, cheese and local produce, and on Saturdays a farmers' market fills the central streets while a much larger outdoor market sets up on the western edge of town. The market hall is closed on Sundays. The small castle and the old streets around it are a short walk away.
Day Trips from Faro
Faro is the best base for the eastern Algarve, and it is also where the train is most useful. The line east to Vila Real de Santo António is short and stops at most of the places worth a day trip.
Olhão and the Ria Formosa islands
Olhão is about 10 minutes from Faro by train. Its two riverside market halls sell fish and local produce, and ferries leave from the waterfront for the Ria Formosa islands of Armona and Culatra, with long, quiet beaches facing the Atlantic. Boat tours combine several islands in a day.
RIA FORMOSA 3 ISLANDS TOUR
A boat tour from Olhão through the Ria Formosa lagoon, stopping at three islands, including Armona or Deserta and Culatra.
See the islands tour →Tavira
Tavira, about 30 to 35 minutes from Faro by train, has an old town of churches and tiled houses on both banks of the Gilão river, joined by an old bridge known locally as the Roman bridge. From the town, a ferry or a walk and a short miniature train ride lead to Ilha de Tavira and Praia do Barril, known for its anchor cemetery.
Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte, Spain
The train line ends at Vila Real de Santo António, about an hour from Faro, a town built on a grid plan on the Guadiana river. A passenger ferry run by Transporte Fluvial del Guadiana crosses the river from the waterfront to Ayamonte, in Spain, in a crossing of about 12 minutes. Check the current timetable before you go, and remember that Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal.
| Day trip by train from Faro | Approximate journey time |
|---|---|
| Olhão | About 10 minutes |
| Tavira | 30 to 35 minutes |
| Vila Real de Santo António | About 1 hour |
| Lagos (westbound) | About 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes |

Day Trips Beyond the Algarve
These are long days, so start early or consider staying a night.
Seville, Spain
Seville is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road from Faro, across the Guadiana bridge into Andalusia. A day is enough for the cathedral and its Giralda tower, the Real Alcázar, the Santa Cruz quarter and the Plaza de España. Spain is one hour ahead, so plan opening times in Spanish time. There is no direct train from the Algarve, so drive, take a coach or join a tour.
SEVILLE FULL-DAY TOUR
A full-day guided trip across the border to Seville, with Maria Luisa Park, Plaza de España and free time in the old town. Pick-up available between Monte Gordo and Quarteira.
See the Seville tour →Évora
Évora, in the Alentejo, is about 2 hours north of the Algarve by road. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Roman Temple, the cathedral and the Chapel of Bones in the Church of São Francisco. It is a good stop on the way to or from Lisbon if you are travelling by car.
Lisbon
Lisbon is about 2.5 to 3 hours from the central Algarve by car or train. A day trip is possible but tiring, so most visitors are better off adding a few nights in Lisbon to the trip. If you only have a day, a guided tour handles the driving.
Beyond the Algarve
LISBON, ALGARVE & ÉVORA ROAD TRIP
A self-drive package with car hire and hotels that links Lisbon, Évora and the Algarve, so the long trips become part of the route.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best day trips from Lagos?
Sagres and Cape St Vincent, the west coast beaches of the Costa Vicentina, Ponta da Piedade by boat, and Silves and Monchique inland.
What are the best day trips from Faro?
Olhão and the Ria Formosa islands, Tavira, Loulé and Vila Real de Santo António with the ferry to Ayamonte. Seville also works as a long day trip.
Can you do day trips from Faro by train?
Yes. Trains run east to Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, and west to Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. Check how far each station is from the town centre before you go.
Can you do a day trip to Spain from the Algarve?
Yes. The quickest option is the ferry from Vila Real de Santo António to Ayamonte. Seville is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Faro by road, and organised tours run from the Algarve.
Is a day trip to Lisbon from the Algarve worth it?
It is possible, but at 2.5 to 3 hours each way it is a long day. If you have the time, spend at least two nights in Lisbon instead.
Do you need a car for Algarve day trips?
Not for the eastern Algarve, which the train covers well, or for tours with hotel pick-up. A car helps for the west coast, Monchique and smaller villages.
