Lagos at a glance

Quick answer: Lagos is one of the western Algarve's best all-round bases, blending dramatic cliffs and beaches with a lively historic old town. Do not miss Ponta da Piedade and a boat or kayak tour of its grottoes, plus the beaches of Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. Two to three days is enough to enjoy the town and its coast, more if you want day trips to Sagres and Cape St. Vincent.

Lagos sits on the Barlavento (western) coast of the Algarve and was once a launch point for Portugal's Age of Discoveries, so it pairs golden cliffs and turquoise water with real history. It is walkable, lively, and well connected, which makes it a favourite for first-time visitors. Here is what to see and do, the best beaches, and how to plan your trip.

Top things to do in Lagos

1. Ponta da Piedade

The signature sight: a headland of golden cliffs, sea stacks and grottoes just south of town, topped by a lighthouse. Walk down the staircase for the views, or, better, see it from the water on a boat, kayak or SUP tour that weaves through the rock arches and caves.

2. The historic old town

Wander the cobbled streets and town walls of one of the Algarve's most characterful centres. Highlights include the richly gilded Igreja de Santo António, the former slave market building (now a museum) on Praça do Infante, and the seafront Forte da Ponta da Bandeira. The old town is also the heart of Lagos' dining and nightlife.

3. Boat tours and dolphin watching

Lagos is one of the best places in the Algarve for boat trips: grotto tours of Ponta da Piedade, coastal cruises, and dolphin-watching excursions into the Atlantic. Kayak and SUP tours get you closest to the caves.

4. The marina and waterfront

Lagos Marina sits across the river from the old town and is a relaxed spot for a drink, a meal, or the departure point for many tours. The riverfront promenade links it to the centre.

5. Day trips west

Lagos is the natural base for the far west: Sagres and its clifftop fortress, and Cape St. Vincent, the dramatic southwestern tip of mainland Europe, are an easy drive away.

The best beaches in Lagos

  • Praia da Dona Ana: postcard cliffs and clear water, one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal.
  • Praia do Camilo: a pretty cove reached by a wooden staircase, next to Ponta da Piedade.
  • Meia Praia: a long sweep of golden sand east of town, great for a walk or watersports.
  • Praia do Pinhão: a small, sheltered cove close to the centre.
  • Praia da Luz: a wider family beach in the nearby village of Luz, a short drive west.

How to get to Lagos

Lagos is about a 1 hour 45 minute drive from Faro Airport, the Algarve's main gateway. It is also the western end of the Algarve train line, with connections from Faro and from Lisbon (usually changing at Tunes). Once in Lagos, the old town and main beaches are walkable, and buses, taxis and tours cover the rest. For the wider picture, see our guide on how to get to the Algarve.

Best time to visit Lagos

Spring and early autumn (roughly April to June and September to October) are ideal: warm, comfortable and quieter. July and August are the warmest and liveliest, but also the busiest, so book ahead. For where to base yourself across the region, see our guide on where to stay in the Algarve.
